But you do see! Indeed, you note trouble and grief, that you may take it into your hands; the helpless commit themselves to you; you have been the helper of the orphan.

For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.


“When a slaveowner strikes a male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies immediately, the owner shall be punished.


eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,


burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.


If the owner knocks out a tooth of a male or female slave, the slave shall be let go, a free person, to compensate for the tooth.


And, masters, do the same to them. Stop threatening them, for you know that both of you have the same Lord in heaven, and with him there is no partiality.


You must not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.


Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, for you know that you also have a Master in heaven.
