When the turn came for Esther daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had adopted her as his own daughter, to go in to the king, she asked for nothing except what Hegai the king’s eunuch, who had charge of the women, advised. Now Esther was admired by all who saw her.


He had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his cousin, for she had neither father nor mother; the young woman was fair and beautiful, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai adopted her as his own daughter.


Esther said, “A foe and an enemy, this wicked Haman!” Then Haman was terrified before the king and the queen.


Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “See, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hung him on the pole because he plotted to kill the Jews.


Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; they heap up and do not know who will gather.


The good leave an inheritance to their children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.


One who augments wealth by exorbitant interest gathers it for another who is kind to the poor.


But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’
