He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”


The hungry eat their harvest, and they take it even out of the thorns, and the thirsty pant after their wealth.


Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; they heap up and do not know who will gather.


Though in their lifetime they count themselves happy —for you are praised when you do well for yourself—


When your eyes light upon it, it is gone, for suddenly it takes wings to itself, flying like an eagle toward heaven.


For to the one who pleases him God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he gives the work of gathering and heaping, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.


There is a grievous ill that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owners to their hurt,


As they came from their mother’s womb, so they shall go again, naked as they came; they shall take nothing for their toil that they may carry away with their hands.


You have looked for much, but it came to little, and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the Lord of hosts. Because my house lies in ruins, while all of you hurry off to your own houses.


Everyone who is left in your family shall come and prostrate himself before him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, ‘Please put me in one of the priest’s places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.’ ”
