17 My anger will be kindled against them on that day. I will forsake them and hide my face from them; they will become easy prey, and many terrible troubles will come upon them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these troubles come upon us because our God is not in our midst?’

“Go, inquire of the Lord for me, for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found, for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our ancestors did not obey the words of this book to do according to all that is written concerning us.”

Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off; do not forsake me, O God of my salvation!


By your favor, O Lord, you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed.


You made us turn back from the foe, and our enemies have gotten spoil.


How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire?


Who considers the power of your anger? Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you.


You have forsaken your people, the house of Jacob, for they are full of diviners from the East and of soothsayers like the Philistines, and they clasp hands with foreigners.


Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people, and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them; the mountains quaked, and their corpses were like refuse in the streets. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.


Why, O Lord, do you let us stray from your ways and let our heart harden, so that we do not fear you? Turn back for the sake of your servants, the tribes that are your heritage.


There is no one who calls on your name or attempts to take hold of you, for you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.


I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.


When this people or a prophet or a priest asks you, “What is the burden of the Lord?” you shall say to them, “You are the burden. I will cast you off, says the Lord.”


therefore, I will surely lift you up and cast you away from my presence, you and the city that I gave to you and your ancestors.


They are coming to fight the Chaldeans and to fill them with the dead bodies of those whom I shall strike down in my anger and my wrath, for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their wickedness.

The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The Lord your God threatened this place with this disaster,


Listen! The cry of the daughter of my people from far and wide in the land: “Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not in her?” (“Why have they provoked me to anger with their images, with their foreign idols?”)


and I will never again hide my face from them, when I pour out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord God.


They utter mere words; with empty oaths they make covenants; so litigation springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.


Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them until no one is left. Woe to them indeed when I depart from them!


Then they will cry to the Lord, but he will not answer them; he will hide his face from them at that time because they have acted wickedly.


Do not go up, for the Lord is not with you; do not let yourselves be struck down before your enemies.


the Lord will be unwilling to pardon them, for then the Lord’s anger and passion will smoke against them. All the curses written in this book will descend on them, and the Lord will blot out their names from under heaven.


I declare to you today that you shall certainly perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.


I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live,


On that day I will surely hide my face on account of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods.


Have no dread of them, for the Lord your God, who is present with you, is a great and awesome God.


The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, serving the Baals and the Astartes, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. Thus they abandoned the Lord and did not worship him.


Gideon answered him, “But sir, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our ancestors recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has cast us off and given us into the hand of Midian.”
