18 It may be that there is among you a man or woman or a family or tribe whose heart is already turning away from the Lord our God to serve the gods of those nations. It may be that there is among you a root sprouting poisonous and bitter growth.

Why do the wicked renounce God and say in their hearts, “You will not call us to account”?


They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.


Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets: I am going to make them eat wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land.


They keep saying to those who despise the word of the Lord, “It shall be well with you,” and to all who stubbornly follow their own stubborn hearts, they say, “No calamity shall come upon you.”


Why do we sit still? Gather together; let us go into the fortified cities and perish there, for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish and has given us poisoned water to drink because we have sinned against the Lord.


Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I am feeding this people with wormwood and giving them poisonous water to drink.


They utter mere words; with empty oaths they make covenants; so litigation springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.


Do horses run on rocky crags? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,


For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and the chains of wickedness.”


All who hear the words of this oath and bless themselves, thinking in their hearts, ‘We are safe even though we go our own stubborn ways’ (thus sweeping away the moist with the dry)—


Their vine comes from the vinestock of Sodom, from the vineyards of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison; their clusters are bitter;


See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God, that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble and through it many become defiled.


Take care, brothers and sisters, that none of you may have an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.
