Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations; she finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress.


Give them anguish of heart; your curse be on them!


Because of this our hearts are sick; because of these things our eyes have grown dim:


I in turn will do this to you: I will bring terror on you, consumption and fever that waste the eyes and cause life to pine away. You shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.


And as for those of you who survive, I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; the sound of a driven leaf shall put them to flight, and they shall flee as one flees from the sword, and they shall fall though no one pursues.


And though they go into captivity in front of their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them; and I will fix my eyes on them for harm and not for good.


I hear, and I tremble within; my lips quiver at the sound. Rottenness enters into my bones, and my steps tremble beneath me. I wait quietly for the day of calamity to come upon the people who attack us.


all this is but the beginning of the birth pangs.


People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.


let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and keep their backs forever bent.”


Your life shall hang in doubt before you; night and day you shall be in dread, with no assurance of your life.
