He carried away all Jerusalem, all the officials, all the warriors, ten thousand captives, all the artisans and the smiths; no one remained except the poorest people of the land.


The people of Israel took captive two hundred thousand of their kin: women, sons, and daughters; they also took much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria.


They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity, for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord— and their descendants as well.


The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word; but hear, all you peoples, and behold my suffering; my young women and young men have gone into captivity.


Her foes have become the masters; her enemies prosper because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe.


Then the king commanded his palace master Ashpenaz to bring some of the Israelites of the royal family and of the nobility:


Make yourselves bald and cut off your hair for your pampered children; make yourselves as bald as the eagle, for they have gone from you into exile.


Your sons and daughters shall be given to another people while you look on; you will strain your eyes looking for them all day but be powerless to do anything.
