“Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the Lord alone shall be devoted to destruction.


You shall not follow a majority in wrongdoing; when you bear witness in a lawsuit, you shall not side with the majority so as to pervert justice,


“You shall not pervert the justice due to your poor in their lawsuits.


“You shall not oppress a resident alien; you know the heart of an alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.


lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted.


If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and right, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them.


Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the orphan, and the widow’s cause does not come before them.


What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor? says the Lord God of hosts.


Those who walk righteously and speak uprightly, who despise the gain of oppression, who wave away a bribe instead of accepting it, who stop their ears from hearing of bloodshed and shut their eyes from looking on evil,


Thus says the Lord: Act with justice and righteousness and deliver from the hand of the oppressor anyone who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the alien, the orphan, and the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place.


they have grown fat and sleek. They know no limits in deeds of wickedness; they do not judge with justice the cause of the orphan, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy.


The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery; they have oppressed the poor and needy and have extorted from the alien without justice.


Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the alien residing within you suffers extortion; the orphan and the widow are wronged in you.


“When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien.


Their hands are skilled to do evil; the official and the judge ask for a bribe, and the powerful dictate what they desire; thus they pervert justice.


do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.


Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.


Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”


You must not be partial in judging: hear out the small and the great alike; you shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. Any case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.’


You must not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.


You shall give the pledge back by sunset, so that your neighbor may sleep in the cloak and bless you, and it will be to your credit before the Lord your God.


Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this.


“No one shall take a mill or an upper millstone in pledge, for that would be taking a life in pledge.


“ ‘Cursed be anyone who deprives an alien, an orphan, or a widow of justice.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen!’


But you have dishonored the poor person. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into the courts?
