For he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had destroyed; he erected altars for Baal, made a sacred pole, as King Ahab of Israel had done, worshiped all the host of heaven and served them.


You shall make no covenant with them and their gods.


They shall not live in your land, lest they make you sin against me, for if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.”


Take care not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you are going, or it will become a snare among you.


and you will take wives from among their daughters for your sons, and their daughters who prostitute themselves to their gods will make your sons also prostitute themselves to their gods.


Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”


Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you,


Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness; rather, expose them.


Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable.


“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you must not learn to imitate the abhorrent practices of those nations.


Indeed, you shall annihilate them—the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites—just as the Lord your God has commanded,


“If you besiege a town for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you must not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them. Although you may take food from them, you must not cut them down. Are trees in the field human beings that they should come under siege from you?


It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to occupy their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is dispossessing them before you, in order to fulfill the promise that the Lord made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.


Take note of those who do not obey what we say in this letter; have nothing to do with them, so that they may be ashamed.


and wrangling among those who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.


know assuredly that the Lord your God will not continue to drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a scourge on your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the Lord your God has given you.


So now I say, I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become adversaries to you, and their gods shall be a snare to you.”
