When King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria, he saw the altar that was at Damascus. King Ahaz sent to the priest Uriah a model of the altar and its pattern exact in all its details.


They despised his statutes and his covenant that he had made with their ancestors and the warnings that he had given them. They went after false idols and became false; they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the Lord had commanded them that they should not do as they did.


you shall not bow down to their gods or serve them or follow their practices, but you shall utterly demolish them and break their pillars in pieces.


Thus says the Lord: Do not learn the way of the nations or be dismayed at the signs of the heavens, for the nations are dismayed at them.


Then you shall know that I am the Lord, whose statutes you have not followed and whose ordinances you have not kept, but you have acted according to the ordinances of the nations that are around you.”


For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, then wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and presented the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing odors, and there they poured out their drink offerings.


What is in your mind shall never happen—the thought, “Let us be like the nations, like the tribes of the countries, and worship wood and stone.”


You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not follow their statutes.


So keep my charge not to commit any of these abominations that were done before you and not to defile yourselves by them: I am the Lord your God.”


you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their figured stones, destroy all their cast images, and demolish all their high places.


Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.


Now this I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer walk as the gentiles walk, in the futility of their minds;


Take care, or you will be seduced into turning away, serving other gods and worshiping them,


“When the Lord your God has cut off before you the nations whom you are about to enter to dispossess them, when you have dispossessed them and live in their land,


You must not do the same for the Lord your God, because every abhorrent thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods. They would even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.


“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you must not learn to imitate the abhorrent practices of those nations.


so that they may not teach you to do all the abhorrent things that they do for their gods and you thus sin against the Lord your God.


You shall devour all the peoples that the Lord your God is giving over to you, showing them no pity; you shall not serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.
