Moreover, the altar at Bethel, the high place erected by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin—he pulled down that altar along with the high place. He burned the high place, crushing it to dust; he also burned the sacred pole.


Now when all this was finished, all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke down the pillars, cut down the sacred poles, and pulled down the high places and the altars throughout all Judah and Benjamin, and in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said: Strike the capitals until the thresholds shake and shatter them on the heads of all the people, and those who are left I will kill with the sword; not one of them shall flee away, not one of them shall escape.
