All the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king to succeed his father Amaziah.


But the people of the land killed all those who had conspired against King Amon, and the people of the land made his son Josiah king in place of him.

His officers carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem and buried him in his tomb with his ancestors in the city of David.


After all this, when Josiah had set the temple in order, King Neco of Egypt went up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah went out against him.


So his servants took him out of the chariot and carried him in his second chariot and brought him to Jerusalem. There he died and was buried in the tombs of his ancestors. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.


Do not weep for him who is dead, nor bemoan him; weep rather for him who goes away, for he shall return no more to see his native land.


For thus says the Lord concerning Shallum son of King Josiah of Judah, who succeeded his father Josiah and who went away from this place: He shall return here no more,


As for you, raise up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,
