The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom: We have heard a report from the Lord, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Rise up! Let us rise against it for battle!”


For the Lord had caused the Aramean army to hear the sound of chariots and of horses, the sound of a great army, so that they said to one another, “The king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to fight against us.”


Do not be fainthearted or fearful at the rumors heard in the land— one year one rumor comes, the next year another, rumors of violence in the land and of ruler against ruler.


Thus says the Lord: I am going to stir up a destructive wind against Babylon and against the inhabitants of Leb-qamai,


I have heard tidings from the Lord, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Gather yourselves together and come against her, and rise up for battle!”


but with righteousness he shall judge for the poor and decide with equity for the oppressed of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.


Our God comes and does not keep silent; before him is a devouring fire and a mighty tempest all around him.


On the wicked he will rain coals of fire and sulfur; a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.


Terrifying sounds are in their ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon them.


By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.


And the Lord sent an angel who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in disgrace to his own land. When he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.


Because you have raged against me and your arrogance has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth; I will turn you back on the way by which you came.


By the way that he came, by the same he shall return; he shall not come into this city, says the Lord.


He will repay them for their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the Lord our God will wipe them out.
