15 They despised his statutes and his covenant that he had made with their ancestors and the warnings that he had given them. They went after false idols and became false; they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the Lord had commanded them that they should not do as they did.

Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your mind and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and give it to your servant.


because of all the sins of Baasha and the sins of his son Elah that they committed and that they caused Israel to commit, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols.


and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord had driven out before the people of Israel and in the customs that the kings of Israel had introduced.


Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the Lord; they testified against them, but they would not listen.


He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the Lord had driven out before the people of Israel.


Manasseh misled Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the people of Israel.


“Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their backs and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies.


Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them.


They did not keep God’s covenant and refused to walk according to his law.


The Lord said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and instructions?


They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish.


They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction given by idols is no better than wood!


Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me and went after worthless things and became worthless themselves?


It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord.


The Lord could no longer bear the sight of your evil doings, the abominations that you committed; therefore your land became a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is to this day.


It is because you burned offerings and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his decrees that this disaster has befallen you, as is still evident today.”


Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, “I beg you not to do this abominable thing that I hate!”


Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have come to settle? Will you be cut off and become an object of cursing and ridicule among all the nations of the earth?


yet they did not listen to me or pay attention, but they stiffened their necks. They did worse than their ancestors did.


The wise shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; since they have rejected the word of the Lord, what wisdom is in them?


Mortal, you are living in the midst of a rebellious house who have eyes to see but do not see, who have ears to hear but do not hear,


He said to me, “Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day.


if you spurn my statutes and abhor my ordinances, so that you will not observe all my commandments and you break my covenant,


Those who worship vain idols forsake their true loyalty.


He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the person in charge of the banquet.” So they took it.


Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “no idol in the world really exists” and that “there is no God but one.”


No one shall be found among you who makes a son or daughter pass through fire, or who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,


they and indeed all the nations will wonder, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land? What caused this great display of anger?’


They made me jealous with what is no god, provoked me with their idols. So I will make them jealous with what is no people, provoke them with a foolish nation.


Indeed, their rock is not like our Rock; our enemies are fools.


and do not turn aside after useless things that cannot profit or save, for they are useless.
