10 When King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria, he saw the altar that was at Damascus. King Ahaz sent to the priest Uriah a model of the altar and its pattern exact in all its details.

In the days of King Pekah of Israel, King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria.


The priest Uriah built the altar; in accordance with all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so did the priest Uriah build it, before King Ahaz arrived from Damascus.


He built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “In Jerusalem I will put my name.”


“All this, in writing at the Lord’s direction, he made clear to me—the plan of all the works.”


Thus they became unclean by their acts and prostituted themselves in their doings.


And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. He rose early in the morning, built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and set up twelve pillars, corresponding to the twelve tribes of Israel.


When Moses saw that they had done all the work as the Lord had commanded, he blessed them.


and have it attested for me by reliable witnesses, the priest Uriah and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.”


Thus says the Lord: Do not learn the way of the nations or be dismayed at the signs of the heavens, for the nations are dismayed at them.


You prostituted yourself with the Assyrians because you were insatiable; you prostituted yourself with them, and still you were not satisfied.


When they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the plan of the temple, its arrangement, its exits and its entrances, and its whole form—all its ordinances and its entire plan and all its laws; and write it down in their sight so that they may observe and follow the entire plan and all its ordinances.


When they placed their threshold by my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they were defiling my holy name by their abominations that they committed; therefore I have consumed them in my anger.


Because they ministered to them before their idols and made the house of Israel stumble into iniquity, therefore I have sworn concerning them, says the Lord God, that they shall bear their punishment.


So, for the sake of your tradition, you nullify the word of God.


in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.’ ”


Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.


take care that you are not snared into imitating them, after they have been destroyed before you; do not inquire concerning their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also want to do the same.’


And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we could say, “Look at this copy of the altar of the Lord that our ancestors made, not for burnt offerings nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.”


You know that you were ransomed from the futile conduct inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold
