2 Chronicles 8:14 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition 2021

14 According to the ordinance of his father David, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their service, and the Levites for their offices of praise and ministry alongside the priests as the duty of each day required, and the gatekeepers in their divisions for the several gates, for so David the man of God had commanded.

and his kindred, Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God, and Ezra the scribe went in front of them.


And the leaders of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, with their associates over against them, to praise and to give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, section opposite to section.


Then they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses for the service of God at Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.

Once when he was serving as priest before God during his section’s turn of duty,


In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was descended from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.


When the service had been prepared, the priests stood in their place and the Levites in their divisions according to the king’s command.


Hezekiah appointed the divisions of the priests and of the Levites, division by division, everyone according to his service, the priests and the Levites, for burnt offerings and offerings of well-being, to minister in the gates of the camp of the Lord and to give thanks and praise.


This is what you are to do: one-third of you, priests and Levites, who come on duty on the Sabbath shall be gatekeepers,


Now when the priests came out of the holy place (for all the priests who were present had sanctified themselves, without regard to their divisions),


“All this, in writing at the Lord’s direction, he made clear to me—the plan of all the works.”


When David was old and full of days, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.


Heman and Jeduthun had with them trumpets and cymbals for the music and instruments for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were appointed to the gate.


A man of God came out of Judah by the word of the Lord to Bethel, while Jeroboam was standing by the altar to offer incense.


The spirit of the Lord speaks through me; his word is upon my tongue.


This is the blessing with which Moses, the man of God, blessed the Israelites before his death.


David left Asaph and his kinsfolk there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister regularly before the ark as each day required,


The divisions of the descendants of Aaron were these. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.


David and the officers of the army also set apart for the service the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals. The list of those who did the work and of their duties was:


As for the divisions of the gatekeepers: of the Korahites, Meshelemiah son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.


They did not turn away from what the king had commanded the priests and Levites regarding anything at all or regarding the treasuries.


He stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the commandment of David and of Gad the king’s seer and of the prophet Nathan, for the commandment was from the Lord through his prophets.


Make preparations by your ancestral houses by your divisions, following the written directions of King David of Israel and the written directions of his son Solomon.


The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north, and south;


Along with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, David organized them according to the appointed duties in their service.


He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean.


The singers, the descendants of Asaph, were in their place according to the command of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and the king’s seer Jeduthun. The gatekeepers were at each gate; they did not need to interrupt their service, for their kindred the Levites made preparations for them.


Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers standing guard at the storehouses of the gates.
