16 Therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep for your servant my father David that which you promised him, saying, ‘There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children keep to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.’

Then the Lord will establish his word that he spoke concerning me: ‘If your heirs take heed to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you a successor on the throne of Israel.’


“Concerning this house that you are building, if you will walk in my statutes, obey my ordinances, and keep all my commandments by walking in them, then I will establish my promise with you that I made to your father David.


Do you not know that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel forever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt?


Yet the Lord would not destroy the house of David because of the covenant that he had made with David and since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his descendants forever.


Then the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. Jehoiada said to them, “Here is the king’s son! Let him reign, as the Lord promised concerning the sons of David.


Therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, let your word be confirmed that you promised to your servant David.


As for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my ordinances,


then I will establish your royal throne, as I made a covenant with your father David saying, ‘You shall never lack a successor to rule over Israel.’


Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.


How can young people keep their way pure? By guarding it according to your word.


The Lord swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: “One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne.


If your sons keep my covenant and my decrees that I shall teach them, their sons also, forevermore, shall sit on your throne.”


For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in faithfulness to you.


Thus says the Lord God: I will also let the house of Israel ask me to do this for them: to multiply their people like sheep.
