Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign; he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord, as his ancestor David had done,


He sacrificed and made offerings on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.


Manasseh misled Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the people of Israel.


Look on all who are proud and bring them low; tread down the wicked where they stand.


When Moses saw that the people were out of control (for Aaron had lost control of them, prompting derision among their enemies),


Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.


A person’s pride will bring humiliation, but one who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.


Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he was determined to go after vanity.


It is a guilt offering; you have incurred guilt before the Lord.”


For you have kept the statutes of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab, and you have followed their counsels. Therefore I will make you a desolation and your inhabitants an object of hissing, so you shall bear the scorn of my people.


Aliens residing among you shall ascend above you higher and higher, while you shall descend lower and lower.


(“See, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and is clothed, not going about naked and exposed to shame.”)


The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low; he also exalts.
