A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their enemies all around and Joshua was old and well advanced in years,


Joshua summoned all Israel, their elders and heads, their judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years,


since I know that my death will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.


Now Eli was very old. He heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel and how they lay with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.


Why then look with greedy eye at my sacrifices and my offerings and honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?


Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”


For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them.


But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” He said, “Here I am.”


When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel.


so that we also may be like other nations and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles.”


Yet his sons did not follow in his ways but turned aside after gain; they took bribes and perverted justice.


and said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations.”
