Then the man of God went back with him and ate food and drank water in his house.


At the command of the Lord a certain member of a company of prophets said to another, “Strike me!” But the man refused to strike him.


‘How?’ the Lord asked him. He replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ Then the Lord said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do it.’


Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.


Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.


A false witness will not go unpunished, and a liar will not escape.


Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.”

But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a more shocking thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from wickedness; all of them have become like Sodom to me and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.


They keep saying to those who despise the word of the Lord, “It shall be well with you,” and to all who stubbornly follow their own stubborn hearts, they say, “No calamity shall come upon you.”


See, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, says the Lord, and who tell them and who lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or command them, so they do not profit this people at all, says the Lord.


Send to all the exiles, saying, Thus says the Lord concerning Shemaiah of Nehelam: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, though I did not send him, and has led you to trust in a lie,


therefore thus says the Lord: I am going to punish Shemaiah of Nehelam and his descendants; he shall not have anyone living among this people to see the good that I am going to do to my people, says the Lord, for he has spoken rebellion against the Lord.


They have spoken falsely of the Lord and have said, “He will do nothing. No evil will come upon us, and we shall not see sword or famine.”


the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule as the prophets direct; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?


Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not disheartened them, and you have encouraged the wicked not to turn from their wicked way and save their lives,


Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have uttered falsehood and envisioned lies, I am against you, says the Lord God.


The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you to speak.” So Balaam went on with the officials of Balak.


For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.


“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.


For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded.


But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by its cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.


But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed!


Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will renounce the faith by paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,


through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared with a hot iron.


But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive opinions. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.


Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.


And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed in its presence the signs by which he deceived those who had received the brand of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.


And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Although you are barren, having borne no children, you shall conceive and bear a son.
