Although you have not seen him, you love him, and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,


If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true;


If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.


But whoever hates a brother or sister is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness.


Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” but does not obey his commandments is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist;


Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness.


How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?


No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is perfected in us.
