Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth–a´ven, nor swear, The Lord liveth.


So the Lord saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Beth–a´ven.


And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth–a´ven.


Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.


And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Beth–el, and pitched his tent, having Beth–el on the west, and Ha´i on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord.


See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,


The children also of Benjamin from Geba dwelt at Michmash, and Ai´ja, and Beth–el, and in their villages,


the king of Jericho, one; the king of A´i, which is beside Beth–el, one;


And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into a harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.


And he called the name of that place Beth–el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.


And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite A´i; and make not all the people to labor thither; for they are but few.


to them which were in Beth–el, and to them which were in south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,


Howl, O Heshbon, for A´i is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.


And he set the one in Beth–el, and the other put he in Dan.


He is come to Ai´ath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his carriages:
