We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.


The Lord said also unto me in the days of Josi´ah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.


Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.


Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.


Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defensed cities, and let us be silent there: for the Lord our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord.


Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.


But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.
