The people of Israel traveled from Rameses to Succoth. There were about 600,000 men. This does not include the children.


“Count the people of Israel so that you will know how many people there are. Every time this is done, every person must make a payment for himself to the Lord. If each person does this, then no terrible thing will happen to the people.


The total number of men that were counted gave more than 3 3Ú4 tons [443] of silver. (This was weighed using the official measure. [444])


All the men 20 years old or older were counted. There were 603,550 men, and each man had to pay a tax of 1 beqa [445] of silver. (Using the official measure, a beqa is 1Ú2 shekel. [446])


And Moses and Aaron called all the people of Israel together. Then the people were listed by their families and their family groups. All the men who were 20 years old or older were listed.


Moses did exactly what the Lord commanded—Moses counted the people while they were in the Sinai desert.


They counted Simeon’s family group. The names of all the men who were 20 years old or older and able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed with their families and family groups.
