1 And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said: I will deceive him. And the Lord said to him: By what means?

7 Vain is the horse for safety: neither shall he be saved by the abundance of his strength.


I thought upon the days of old: and I had in my mind the eternal years.


8 An unjust witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.


I am the Lord, and there is none else: there is no God, besides me: I girded thee, and thou hast not known me:


Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called the lady of kingdoms.


I foretold thee of old, before they came to pass I told thee, lest thou shouldst say: My idols have done these things, and my graven and molten things have commanded them.


3 The ass seeing the angel standing in the way, with a drawn sword, turned herself out of the way, and went into the field. And when Balaam beat her, and had a mind to bring her again to the way,


And Balaam said to Balac: Build me here seven altars, and prepare as many calves, and the same number of rams.


And Balaam said to Balac: Stand a while by thy burnt offering, until I go, to see if perhaps the Lord will meet me, and whatsoever he shall command, I will speak to thee.


3 And he rose in the morning and said to the princes: Go into your country, because the Lord hath forbid me to come with you.

And when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord that he should bless Israel. he went not as he had gone before, to seek divination: but setting his face towards the desert,


8 And he shall possess Idumea: the inheritance of Seir shall come to their enemies, but Israel shall do manfully
