Why did you go out [to the desert]? To see a prophet? Yes, I should say [he was], and much more than a prophet.


But if we say, ‘from men,’ we are afraid the crowd will oppose us because they all consider John to be a prophet.”


For John came to show you the way to be right with God, but you would not believe his message. Yet the tax collectors and prostitutes believed it, and when you saw this, even then you did not change your minds so as to believe his message.


But if we say ‘from men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”


And when the Council had threatened them some more, they [finally] released them because they could not find any reason to punish them. [Actually] they were worried about how the people felt [about the matter], since everybody was giving honor to God for the miracle that had been performed.


[Immediately] the captain, with his officers, went [to the Temple] and brought the apostles back again, but did not use any violence because they feared that the people might stone them.
