When he began figuring, one of his servants, who owed him a huge sum of money [Note: The amount is variously estimated to be in the multiple millions of dollars in 2005], was brought to him.


But that [same] servant went out and found one of his fellow-servants who owed him a small sum of money [Note: The amount was about 100 twelve hour days of a farm laborer’s pay or about $10,800 in 2005]. He grabbed him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay [me] what you owe.’


And forgive us of the wrongs we have done to others, since we have also forgiven the wrongs done to us.


I know what I will do, so when I am fired they [i.e., his master’s customers] will welcome me into their homes.’


And he replied, ‘Eight hundred gallons of [olive] oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your contract and quickly sit down and write in four hundred [gallons].’
