Hebrews 4:1 - An Understandable Version (2005 edition)1 So, as long as God’s promise of entering into a state of rest with Him [still] remains, we should fear that someone among you will appear [in the end] to have fallen short of [attaining] it. [Note: In this section “entering into rest” refers to Israel entering Canaan (verses 6, 8) and to Christians entering heaven (verses 3, 9) . The “Sabbath day rest” is presented as a type of both]. See the chapterMore versionsKing James Version (Oxford) 17691 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. See the chapterAmplified Bible - Classic Edition1 THEREFORE, WHILE the promise of entering His rest still holds and is offered [today], let us be afraid [to distrust it], lest any of you should think he has come too late and has come short of [reaching] it. See the chapterAmerican Standard Version (1901)1 Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it. See the chapterCommon English Bible1 Therefore, since the promise that we can enter into rest is still open, let’s be careful so that none of you will appear to miss it. See the chapterCatholic Public Domain Version1 Therefore, we should be afraid, lest the promise of entering into his rest may be relinquished, and some of you may be judged to be lacking. Pay careful attention so that you do not refuse [to hear] God when He speaks to you. [See verse 9]. For if those people [i.e., the Israelites] did not escape [judgment] when they refused [to hear] Him who warned them on earth [i.e., God speaking through Moses at Mount Sinai], how much less [likely] will we escape [judgment] if we reject Him who warns from heaven [i.e., Christ]?
