104 Bible Verses about Addiction

104 Bible Verses about Addiction

Vices have serious consequences, not just physically, but spiritually too. They can really tie you down. You might think it's impossible to break free from whatever's got a hold of you, but I want to share the best antidote there is: the blood of Jesus.

When you come to Him and ask for His help, He's faithful and just to strengthen you in your weaknesses. It's not about your own power, because you can't do it on your own. It's about Christ's transforming power working in you.

So don't give up. As long as you're still breathing, there's hope. Jesus can change your life and make you a new person if you just ask Him and seek Him. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.

As the Bible says in Isaiah 5:11 (NIV): "Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine."

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, putting aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, let us run with patient endurance the race that has been set before us,For they disciplined us for a few days according to what seemed appropriate to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we can have a share in his holiness. Now all discipline seems for the moment not to be joyful but painful, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness for those who are trained by it.Therefore strengthen your slackened hands and your weakened knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame will not be dislocated, but rather be healed.Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.Take care that no one falls short of the grace of God; that no one growing up like a root of bitterness causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;that no one be a sexually immoral or totally worldly person like Esau, who for one meal traded his own birthright. For you know that also afterwards, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, because he did not find an occasion for repentance, although he sought it with tears. For you have not come to something that can be touched, and to a burning fire, and to darkness, and to gloom, and to a whirlwind, and to the noise of a trumpet, and to the sound of words which those who heard begged that not another word be spoken to them.fixing our eyes on Jesus, the originator and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Therefore, because Christ suffered in the flesh, you also equip yourselves with the same way of thinking, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,Just as each one has received a gift, use it for serving one another, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.If anyone speaks, let it be as the oracles of God; if anyone serves, let it be as by the strength that God provides, so that in all things God will be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, when it takes place to test you, as if something strange were happening to you.But to the degree that you share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, so that also at the revelation of his glory you may rejoice and be glad.If you are reviled on account of the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.By all means do not let anyone of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. But if someone suffers as a Christian, he must not be ashamed, but must glorify God with this name. For it is the time for the judgment to begin out from the household of God. But if it begins out from us first, what will be the outcome for those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?And if the righteous are saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? So then also those who suffer according to the will of God must entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for the will of God.For the time that has passed was sufficient to do what the Gentiles desire to do, having lived in licentiousness, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries,

Romans 8:1-2

Consequently, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. But if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also make alive your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you.So then, brothers, we are obligated not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all those who are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba! Father!”The Spirit himself confirms to our spirit that we are children of God,and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer together with him so that we may also be glorified together with him.For I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us.For the eagerly expecting creation awaits eagerly the revelation of the sons of God.For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Prayer

God of immeasurable greatness, glory, and majesty, you are beyond compare, worthy of all adoration and praise. Holy Father, I come to you, humbled and recognizing that only you have the power to renew and transform my life for good, forever. I ask you to free me from every chain, every yoke, every entanglement of wickedness that binds me to these vices. Give me the strength to face this struggle that is causing such pain and hardship in my life and the lives of my family. Help me to be vigilant, for your word tells us that our adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Holy Spirit, govern my mind and body. Give me the strength to overcome temptation and to distance myself from those who encourage these harmful habits. Teach me to walk in the Spirit and not to gratify the desires of the flesh. Root out these vices from my mind and body, once and for all, so that I may build a relationship with you. For my victory comes only from you, not by might, nor by power, but by your Holy Spirit. I renounce all addiction to these vices and pray that the presence of your Holy Spirit will descend upon my life, bringing renewal and restoration to my entire being. In Jesus' name, Amen.
