105 Bible Verses about Drunkenness

105 Bible Verses about Drunkenness

The Bible offers a lot of guidance about alcohol. Leviticus 10:91 says, "You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come." This passage doesn't mean we can't ever have a drink. Alcohol itself isn't sinful.

However, the Bible is very clear that we should steer clear of drunkenness and addiction. Ephesians 5:182 tells us, "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." And 1 Corinthians 6:123 reminds us, "‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’—but I will not be mastered by anything."

So, think about it. While enjoying a drink might not be wrong in itself, it's important to be mindful and make sure it's not controlling you. It's about living a life that honors God and allows the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Ephesians 5:18

And do not choose to be inebriated by wine, for this is self-indulgence. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,

Proverbs 23:1-3

When you sit down to eat with a leader, pay close attention to what has been set before your face,Do not touch the boundaries of little ones, and do not enter into the field of the fatherless. For their close relative is strong, and he will judge their case against you.Let your heart enter into doctrine, and let your ears enter into words of knowledge.Do not be willing to take away discipline from a child. For if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.You will strike him with the rod, and so shall you deliver his soul from Hell.My son, if your soul will become wise, my heart will be glad with you.And my temperament will exult, when your lips will have spoken what is upright.Let not your heart compete with sinners. But be in the fear of the Lord all day long. For you will have hope in the end, and your expectation will not be taken away.Listen, my son, and be wise, and direct your soul along the way.and put a knife to your throat, if, in such a way, you could hold your soul in your own power.Do not be willing to be in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in the carousings of those who gather to feed on flesh. For those who waste time drinking, and who surrender themselves to symbols, will be consumed. And those who sleep will be clothed in rags.Listen to your father, who conceived you. And do not despise your mother, when she is old.Purchase truth, and do not sell wisdom, or doctrine, or understanding. The father of the just exults in gladness; he who has conceived the wise will rejoice in him.Let your father and your mother be joyful, and may she who conceived you exult. My son, offer me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways. For a loose woman is a deep pit, and a foreign woman is a constricted well. She lies in wait along the way like a robber. And the incautious one whom she sees, she will put to death.Who has woe? Whose father has woe? Who has quarrels? Who falls into pits? Who has wounds without cause? Who has watery eyes?Do not desire his foods, in which is the bread of deceit.

It is a luxurious thing, wine, and inebriation is tumultuous. Anyone who is delighted by this will not be wise.Diverse weights, diverse measures: both are abominable with God.A child may be understood by his interests: whether his works may be clean and upright. The hearing ear and the seeing eye: the Lord has made them both.Do not love sleep, lest deprivation oppress you. Open your eyes and be satisfied with bread."It is bad, it is bad," says every buyer; and when he has withdrawn, then he will boast. There is gold, and there are a multitude of jewels. But lips of knowledge are a precious vessel.Take away the vestments of him who stands up to vouch for a stranger, and take a pledge from him instead of from outsiders. The bread of lies is sweet to a man. But afterwards, his mouth will be filled with pebbles.Plans are strengthened by counsels. And wars are to be handled by governments.Do not become involved with him who reveals mysteries, and who walks deceitfully, and who enlarges his lips.Just like the roaring of a lion, so also is the dread of a king. Whoever provokes him sins in his own soul.

A Psalm of David, in commemoration of the Sabbath.O Lord, all my desire is before you, and my groaning before you has not been hidden. My heart has been disturbed. My strength has abandoned me, and the light of my eyes has abandoned me, and it is not with me.My friends and my neighbors have drawn near and stood against me. And those who were next to me stood far apart. And those who sought my soul used violence. And those who sought evil accusations against me were speaking emptiness. And they practiced deceitfulness all day long. But, like someone deaf, I did not hear. And I was like someone mute, not opening his mouth. And I became like a man who does not hear, and who has no reproofs in his mouth. For in you, Lord, I have hoped. You will listen to me, O Lord my God.For I said, "Lest at any time, my enemies might rejoice over me," and, "While my feet are being shaken, they have spoken great things against me."For I have been prepared for scourges, and my sorrow is ever before me.For I will announce my iniquity, and I will think about my sin.O Lord, do not rebuke me in your fury, nor chastise me in your wrath.

Then he may gladden his face with oil, and bread will confirm the heart of man.The trees of the field will be saturated, along with the cedars of Lebanon, which he planted. There, the sparrows will make their nests. Hebrews 12:1-2

Furthermore, since we also have so great a cloud of witnesses over us, let us set aside every burden and sin which may surround us, and advance, through patience, to the struggle offered to us.And indeed, for a few days and according to their own wishes, they instructed us. But he does so to our benefit, so that we may receive his sanctification. Now every discipline, in the present time, does not seem a gladness, of course, but a grief. But afterwards, it will repay a most peaceful fruit of justice to those who become trained in it.Because of this, lift up your lazy hands and your lax knees, and straighten the path of your feet, so that no one, being lame, may wander astray, but instead may be healed.Pursue peace with everyone. Pursue sanctity, without which no one shall see God.Be contemplative, lest anyone lack the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness spring up and impede you, and by it, many might be defiled, lest any fornicator or worldly person be like Esau, who, for the sake of one meal, sold his birthright. For you know that afterwards, when he desired to inherit the benediction, he was rejected. For he found no place for repentance, even though he had sought it with tears. But you have not drawn near to a tangible mountain, or a burning fire, or a whirlwind, or a mist, or a storm,or the sound of a trumpet, or a voice of words. Those who had experienced these things excused themselves, lest the Word be spoken to them.Let us gaze upon Jesus, as the Author and the completion of our faith, who, having joy laid out before him, endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and who now sits at the right hand of the throne of God.

Romans 12:1-2

And so, I beg you, brothers, by the mercy of God, that you offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, with the subservience of your mind.loving one another with fraternal charity, surpassing one another in honor:in solicitude, not lazy; in spirit, fervent; serving the Lord;in hope, rejoicing; in tribulation, enduring; in prayer, ever-willing;in the difficulties of the saints, sharing; in hospitality, attentive.Bless those who are persecuting you: bless, and do not curse.Rejoice with those who are rejoicing. Weep with those who are weeping.Be of the same mind toward one another: not savoring what is exalted, but consenting in humility. Do not choose to seem wise to yourself.Render to no one harm for harm. Provide good things, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of all men.If it is possible, in so far as you are able, be at peace with all men.Do not defend yourselves, dearest ones. Instead, step aside from wrath. For it is written: "Vengeance is mine. I shall give retribution, says the Lord."And do not choose to be conformed to this age, but instead choose to be reformed in the newness of your mind, so that you may demonstrate what is the will of God: what is good, and what is well-pleasing, and what is perfect.

Unto the end. A Psalm of David. Judge me, Lord, for I have been walking in my innocence, and by hoping in the Lord, I will not be weakened.in whose hands are iniquities: their right hand has been filled by bribes. But as for me, I have been walking in my innocence. Redeem me, and have mercy on me.My foot has stood firm in the straight path. In the churches, I will bless you, O Lord.Examine me, Lord, and test me: enkindle my temperament and my heart.

And that servant, who knew the will of his Lord, and who did not prepare and did not act according to his will, will be beaten many times over.Yet he who did not know, and who acted in a way that deserves a beating, will be beaten fewer times. So then, of all to whom much has been given, much will be required. And of those to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be asked.

Prayer

Dear God in Heaven, I come to you, my Father, in Jesus' name. You have the power to free me and make my life whole again. Your word says, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." I ask you to break every chain that binds me to this addiction to alcohol. Please strengthen my faith and help me stand strong against temptation, through the power of your Holy Spirit. Father, I long to overcome this and live my life according to your word. Help me turn away from drinking so I can get my health, finances, and family back. Your word is clear: "Thieves, greedy people, drunkards, those who curse, and those who cheat will not inherit the kingdom of God." Teach me to live a life that pleases you and blesses those around me. Help me stop giving the enemy a foothold in my life. Protect me and keep away those who might try to lead me back to drinking. Lord, I also pray for others struggling with addiction. Guide them, help them, and let them see that true freedom, both physical and spiritual, is found only in you. You alone are the source of victory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
