146 Bible Verses about Poverty

146 Bible Verses about Poverty

In God's Word, we read how He urges us to help the poor and care for those who are vulnerable. His heart breaks for those in need, and He calls us to stand up for them!

As God's people, we need to remember that Scripture is an expression of wisdom, correction, and discipline, but also of God's inexhaustible love. Through it, the Lord speaks to all of us, calling us to bring comfort and help to the poor and needy in this world.

Proverbs 3:27-28 (NIV) says, "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you”—when you already have it with you." Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, we see God's desire for His children to show compassion to the poor and those in need.

Jesus said that the poor will always be with us. He also said that those who show mercy to the poor, the sick, and the needy are actually ministering to Him personally (Matthew 25:35-40) and, therefore, will be rewarded.

So, my encouragement to you today is this: Don't hesitate to do good. Be a channel of blessing to those who are without hope, and leave a lasting mark of love on this society that has been so marked by hatred and indifference.

Philippians 4:12

In addition, the dogs came and licked his sores.“Now the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. And in hell, as he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side.So he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in this fire.’But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish.Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’So the rich man said, ‘Then I beg you, father – send Lazarus to my father’s house(for I have five brothers) to warn them so that they don’t come into this place of torment.’But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to them.’Then the manager said to himself, ‘What should I do, since my master is taking my position away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m too ashamed to beg. Then the rich man said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’He replied to him, ‘If they do not respond to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

James 5:1-4

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming on you.As an example of suffering and patience, brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord’s name.Think of how we regard as blessed those who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance and you have seen the Lord’s purpose, that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy. And above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath. But let your “Yes” be yes and your “No” be no, so that you may not fall into judgment. Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praises. Is anyone among you ill? He should summon the elders of the church, and they should pray for him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick and the Lord will raise him up – and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great effectiveness.Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and there was no rain on the land for three years and six months! Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land sprouted with a harvest. My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back,Your riches have rotted and your clothing has become moth-eaten.he should know that the one who turns a sinner back from his wandering path will save that person’s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.Your gold and silver have rusted and their rust will be a witness against you. It will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have hoarded treasure!Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, my whole being adores you and exalts your greatness. I praise your name and the beauty of your holiness. I've witnessed your goodness and your call for me to show your love here on Earth. So right now, I lift my hands to heaven to ask you to look upon the poor of this world. Oh Lord, see their great need. I pray your mercy and love reach them, that your grace and favor rest upon them, giving them the strength they need to carry on. Deliver them from the evil of those who only plan to harm them. Defend them from oppressors and those who cause them distress. Shower them with your grace, beloved God, so they may experience your goodness and their eyes be filled with hope for a better future in you. Show them your love, and help us to be a channel of blessing to them. Remove any indifference from your people, and may we always be ready to share our bread with the hungry and water with the thirsty. In Jesus’ name, we ask that you keep them, provide for all their needs, and bless their lives, Amen.
