You know, God sees right into our hearts. He knows when we're giving our best. He's not looking for perfection, but He loves it when we give cheerfully and not grudgingly. Think about it: when you give a gift with a happy heart, it just feels different, right?
Your offering should come from a willing heart, given justly, according to what you have. As the Bible says, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart" (2 Corinthians 9:7). It's not about how much, but about the heart behind it.
The Bible teaches us that God wants us to give joyfully and generously, just like He does. He gives abundantly, "without finding fault" (James 1:5). Think about the sunshine and the rain – He gives those to everyone, right? Just like in Matthew 5:45, He sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. That's true generosity.
So, when you give to God, think of it as a thank you for all He's given you. And don't forget about giving to others, too, following God's example. It's a way of acknowledging that everything we have ultimately belongs to Him.
When you give, trust in God's faithfulness and His promise to provide for all your needs. He's got you covered. More than the actual gift, He cares about the attitude behind it. He wants your offering to be obedient and freely given, according to His commandments, and accompanied by a merciful heart, full of the desire to glorify Him. God makes it clear that He's not pleased with offerings that are just going through the motions, you know, those traditional or ritualistic ones that lack a truly obedient and merciful heart, lacking the desire to glorify Him.
But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock – even the fattest of them. And the Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering,
Ascribe to the Lord the splendor he deserves! Bring an offering and enter his presence! Worship the Lord in holy attire!
Then he sat down opposite the offering box, and watched the crowd putting coins into it. Many rich people were throwing in large amounts. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny. He called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others. For they all gave out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in what she had to live on, everything she had.”
So then, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your gift.
Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward.
Each one of you should give just as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, because God loves a cheerful giver.
Give, and it will be given to you: A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into your lap. For the measure you use will be the measure you receive.”
May the Lord answer you when you are in trouble; may the God of Jacob make you secure!May he send you help from his temple; from Zion may he give you support!May he take notice of your offerings; may he accept your burnt sacrifice! (Selah)
“Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward. But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
A generous person will be enriched, and the one who provides water for others will himself be satisfied.
Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
If I give away everything I own, and if I give over my body in order to boast, but do not have love, I receive no benefit.
He will act like a refiner and purifier of silver and will cleanse the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer the Lord a proper offering.
For Macedonia and Achaia are pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.
And God is able to make all grace overflow to you so that because you have enough of everything in every way at all times, you will overflow in every good work.
Evil men borrow, but do not repay their debt, but the godly show compassion and are generous.
Now God who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your supply of seed and will cause the harvest of your righteousness to grow.
My point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously.
With regard to the collection for the saints, please follow the directions that I gave to the churches of Galatia:Now if Timothy comes, see that he has nothing to fear among you, for he is doing the Lord’s work, as I am too.So then, let no one treat him with contempt. But send him on his way in peace so that he may come to me. For I am expecting him with the brothers. With regard to our brother Apollos: I strongly encouraged him to visit you with the other brothers, but it was simply not his intention to come now. He will come when he has the opportunity.Stay alert, stand firm in the faith, show courage, be strong.Everything you do should be done in love. Now, brothers and sisters, you know about the household of Stephanus, that as the first converts of Achaia, they devoted themselves to ministry for the saints. I urge youalso to submit to people like this, and to everyone who cooperates in the work and labors hard.I was glad about the arrival of Stephanus, Fortunatus, and Achaicus because they have supplied the fellowship with you that I lacked. For they refreshed my spirit and yours. So then, recognize people like this. The churches in the province of Asia send greetings to you. Aquila and Prisca greet you warmly in the Lord, with the church that meets in their house. On the first day of the week, each of you should set aside some income and save it to the extent that God has blessed you, so that a collection will not have to be made when I come.
“Bring the entire tithe into the storehouse so that there may be food in my temple. Test me in this matter,” says the Lord who rules over all, “to see if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until there is no room for it all.
And do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.
One person is generous and yet grows more wealthy, but another withholds more than he should and comes to poverty.
“‘When you sacrifice a peace offering sacrifice to the Lord, you must sacrifice it so that it is accepted for you.
You will be enriched in every way so that you may be generous on every occasion, which is producing through us thanksgiving to God,
Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your possessions back from the person who takes them away.
For I have received everything, and I have plenty. I have all I need because I received from Epaphroditus what you sent – a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, very pleasing to God.
“Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.may your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we ourselves have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.“For if you forgive others their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.But if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive you your sins.“When you fast, do not look sullen like the hypocrites, for they make their faces unattractive so that people will see them fasting. I tell you the truth, they have their reward. When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,so that it will not be obvious to others when you are fasting, but only to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.“Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.“The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing?Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are?And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life? Why do you worry about clothing? Think about how the flowers of the field grow; they do not work or spin.Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these! But when you do your giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,And if this is how God clothes the wild grass, which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven, won’t he clothe you even more, you people of little faith? So then, don’t worry saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’For the unconverted pursue these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But above all pursue his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.So then, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.so that your gift may be in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock – even the fattest of them. And the Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering, but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast.
‘Take an offering for the Lord. Let everyone who has a willing heart bring an offering to the Lord: gold, silver, bronze,
When you sacrifice a thanksgiving offering to the Lord, you must sacrifice it so that it is acceptable for your benefit.
Every one of you must give as you are able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.
With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you! I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good!
Certainly you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it; you do not desire a burnt sacrifice. The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit – O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.
“But who am I and who are my people, that we should be in a position to contribute this much? Indeed, everything comes from you, and we have simply given back to you what is yours.
Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box. Then he said to them, “Nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and famines and plagues in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven. But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will be a time for you to serve as witnesses. Therefore be resolved not to rehearse ahead of time how to make your defense. For I will give you the words along with the wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will have some of you put to death. You will be hated by everyone because of my name.Yet not a hair of your head will perish.By your endurance you will gain your lives. He also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those who are inside the city must depart. Those who are out in the country must not enter it,because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.“And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves.People will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man arriving in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the other trees. He said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. When they sprout leaves, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near.So also you, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.“But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will overtake all who live on the face of the whole earth. But stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”So every day Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, but at night he went and stayed on the Mount of Olives. And all the people came to him early in the morning to listen to him in the temple courts. For they all offered their gifts out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had to live on.”
Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice – alive, holy, and pleasing to God – which is your reasonable service.
“Tell the Israelites to take an offering for me; from every person motivated by a willing heart you are to receive my offering.
you yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
When the edict was issued, the Israelites freely contributed the initial portion of their grain, wine, olive oil, honey, and all the produce of their fields. They brought a tenth of everything, which added up to a huge amount.
Those who shed tears as they plant will shout for joy when they reap the harvest. The one who weeps as he walks along, carrying his bag of seed, will certainly come in with a shout of joy, carrying his sheaves of grain.
On the first day of the week, each of you should set aside some income and save it to the extent that God has blessed you, so that a collection will not have to be made when I come.
For if the eagerness is present, the gift itself is acceptable according to whatever one has, not according to what he does not have.
If you then, although you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
The Lord is God and he has delivered us. Tie the offering with ropes to the horns of the altar!
Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people, because you know that you will receive your inheritance from the Lord as the reward. Serve the Lord Christ.
Do not be deceived. God will not be made a fool. For a person will reap what he sows, because the person who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So we must not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not give up.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give him thanks! Praise his name!
No, this is the kind of fast I want. I want you to remove the sinful chains, to tear away the ropes of the burdensome yoke, to set free the oppressed, and to break every burdensome yoke.I want you to share your food with the hungry and to provide shelter for homeless, oppressed people. When you see someone naked, clothe him! Don’t turn your back on your own flesh and blood!
By faith Abel offered God a greater sacrifice than Cain, and through his faith he was commended as righteous, because God commended him for his offerings. And through his faith he still speaks, though he is dead.
But now I go to Jerusalem to minister to the saints. For Macedonia and Achaia are pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.
Tell them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, to be generous givers, sharing with others. In this way they will save up a treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the future and so lay hold of what is truly life.
How can I repay the Lord for all his acts of kindness to me?I will celebrate my deliverance, and call on the name of the Lord.I will fulfill my vows to the Lord before all his people.
But whoever has the world’s possessions and sees his fellow Christian in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God reside in such a person?Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.
So now my heart will sing to you and not be silent; O Lord my God, I will always give thanks to you.
Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, acknowledging his name.
The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he delivers those who are discouraged. The godly face many dangers, but the Lord saves them from each one of them.
If we sowed spiritual blessings among you, is it too much to reap material things from you?
Give a shepherd’s care to God’s flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God’s direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly. And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.
The one who oppresses the poor insults his Creator, but whoever shows favor to the needy honors him.
All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change.
