You know, God sees right into our hearts. He knows when we're giving our best. He's not looking for perfection, but He loves it when we give cheerfully and not grudgingly. Think about it: when you give a gift with a happy heart, it just feels different, right?
Your offering should come from a willing heart, given justly, according to what you have. As the Bible says, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart" (2 Corinthians 9:7). It's not about how much, but about the heart behind it.
The Bible teaches us that God wants us to give joyfully and generously, just like He does. He gives abundantly, "without finding fault" (James 1:5). Think about the sunshine and the rain – He gives those to everyone, right? Just like in Matthew 5:45, He sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. That's true generosity.
So, when you give to God, think of it as a thank you for all He's given you. And don't forget about giving to others, too, following God's example. It's a way of acknowledging that everything we have ultimately belongs to Him.
When you give, trust in God's faithfulness and His promise to provide for all your needs. He's got you covered. More than the actual gift, He cares about the attitude behind it. He wants your offering to be obedient and freely given, according to His commandments, and accompanied by a merciful heart, full of the desire to glorify Him. God makes it clear that He's not pleased with offerings that are just going through the motions, you know, those traditional or ritualistic ones that lack a truly obedient and merciful heart, lacking the desire to glorify Him.
and Hevel too brought from the firstborn of his sheep, including their fat. Adonai accepted Hevel and his offering
give Adonai the glory due to his name; bring an offering, and come into his presence. Worship Adonai in splendid, holy attire.
Then Yeshua sat down opposite the Temple treasury and watched the crowd as they put money into the offering-boxes. Many rich people put in large sums, but a poor widow came and put in two small coins. He called his talmidim to him and said to them, “Yes! I tell you, this poor widow has put more in the offering-box than all the others making donations. For all of them, out of their wealth, have contributed money they can easily spare; but she, out of her poverty, has given everything she had to live on.”
So if you are offering your gift at the Temple altar and you remember there that your brother has something against you, leave your gift where it is by the altar, and go, make peace with your brother. Then come back and offer your gift.
So, when you do tzedakah, don’t announce it with trumpets to win people’s praise, like the hypocrites in the synagogues and on the streets. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already!
Don’t withhold good from someone entitled to it when you have in hand the power to do it.
Each should give according to what he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Give, and you will receive gifts — the full measure, compacted, shaken together and overflowing, will be put right in your lap. For the measure with which you measure out will be used to measure back to you!”
For the leader. A psalm of David:Give victory, Adonai! Let the King answer us the day we call.May Adonai answer you in times of distress, may the name of the God of Ya‘akov protect you.May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Tziyon.
“Do not store up for yourselves wealth here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and burglars break in and steal. So, when you do tzedakah, don’t announce it with trumpets to win people’s praise, like the hypocrites in the synagogues and on the streets. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already!Instead, store up for yourselves wealth in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and burglars do not break in or steal. For where your wealth is, there your heart will be also.
The person who blesses others will prosper; he who satisfies others will be satisfied himself.
Yeshua said to him, “If you are serious about reaching the goal, go and sell your possessions, give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow me!”
I may give away everything that I own, I may even hand over my body to be burned; but if I lack love, I gain nothing.
He will sit, testing and purifying the silver; he will purify the sons of Levi, refining them like gold and silver, so that they can bring offerings to Adonai uprightly.
For Macedonia and Achaia thought it would be good to make some contribution to the poor among God’s people in Yerushalayim.
Moreover, God has the power to provide you with every gracious gift in abundance, so that always in every way you will have all you need yourselves and be able to provide abundantly for every good cause —
He who provides both seed for the planter and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your tzedakah.
Now, in regard to the collection being made for God’s people: you are to do the same as I directed the congregations in Galatia to do.If Timothy comes, see that he has nothing to be afraid of while he is with you; for he is doing the Lord’s work, just as I am.So let no one treat him with disrespect. Help him on his way in peace, so that he will return to me, for the brothers and I are expecting him.As for brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to go and visit you along with the other brothers; and although it was not at all his desire to come at this time, he will come when he has the opportunity.Stay alert, stand firm in the faith, behave like a mentsh, grow strong.Let everything you do be done in love. Now, brothers, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first people in Achaia to put their trust in the Messiah, and they have devoted themselves to serving God’s people.I urge you to submit yourselves to people like these and to everyone who works and toils with them.I am glad that Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus are here, because they have helped make up for your not being here. They have refreshed my spirit, just as they have yours. I want you to show appreciation for people like these. The congregations in the province of Asia send greetings to you. Aquila and Priscilla greet you in union with the Lord, as does the congregation that meets in their house.Every week, on Motza’ei-Shabbat, each of you should set some money aside, according to his resources, and save it up; so that when I come I won’t have to do fundraising.
Bring the whole tenth into the storehouse, so that there will be food in my house, and put me to the test,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot. “See if I won’t open for you the floodgates of heaven and pour out for you a blessing far beyond your needs.
But don’t forget doing good and sharing with others, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
“‘When you offer a sacrifice of peace offerings to Adonai, offer it in a way that will make you accepted.
You will be enriched in every way, so that you can be generous in everything. And through us your generosity will cause people to thank God,
“If someone asks you for something, give it to him; if someone takes what belongs to you, don’t demand it back.
I have been more than paid in full: I have been filled, since I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent — they are a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, one that pleases God well.
“Be careful not to parade your acts of tzedakah in front of people in order to be seen by them! If you do, you have no reward from your Father in heaven.May your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.Give us the food we need today.Forgive us what we have done wrong, as we too have forgiven those who have wronged us.And do not lead us into hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One. For kingship, power and glory are yours forever. Amen.’For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;but if you do not forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will not forgive yours.“Now when you fast, don’t go around looking miserable, like the hypocrites. They make sour faces so that people will know they are fasting. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already! But you, when you fast, wash your face and groom yourself,so that no one will know you are fasting — except your Father, who is with you in secret. Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.“Do not store up for yourselves wealth here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and burglars break in and steal. For where your wealth is, there your heart will be also.‘The eye is the lamp of the body.’ So if you have a ‘good eye’ [that is, if you are generous] your whole body will be full of light;but if you have an ‘evil eye’ [if you are stingy] your whole body will be full of darkness. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can be slave to two masters; for he will either hate the first and love the second, or scorn the second and be loyal to the first. You can’t be a slave to both God and money.“Therefore, I tell you, don’t worry about your life — what you will eat or drink; or about your body — what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?Look at the birds flying about! They neither plant nor harvest, nor do they gather food into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they are?Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to his life?“And why be anxious about clothing? Think about the fields of wild irises, and how they grow. They neither work nor spin thread, yet I tell you that not even Shlomo in all his glory was clothed as beautifully as one of these. But you, when you do tzedakah, don’t even let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. If this is how God clothes grass in the field — which is here today and gone tomorrow, thrown in an oven — won’t he much more clothe you? What little trust you have!“So don’t be anxious, asking, ‘What will we eat?,’ ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘How will we be clothed?’For it is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need them all.But seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.Don’t worry about tomorrow — tomorrow will worry about itself! Today has enough tsuris already! Then your tzedakah will be in secret; and your Father, who sees what you do in secret, will reward you.
In the course of time Kayin brought an offering to Adonai from the produce of the soil;and Hevel too brought from the firstborn of his sheep, including their fat. Adonai accepted Hevel and his offeringbut did not accept Kayin and his offering. Kayin was very angry, and his face fell.
‘Take up a collection for Adonai from among yourselves — anyone whose heart makes him willing is to bring the offering for Adonai: gold, silver and bronze;
“When you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to Adonai, you must do it in a way such that you will be accepted.
but every man is to give what he can, in accordance with the blessing Adonai your God has given you. Haftarah Re’eh: Yesha‘yahu (Isaiah) 54:11–55:5 B’rit Hadashah suggested readings for Parashah Re’eh: 1 Corinthians 5:9–13; 1 Yochanan (1 John) 4:1–6
Rescue me from the guilt of shedding blood, God, God of my salvation! Then my tongue will sing about your righteousness —Adonai, open my lips; then my mouth will praise you.
“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to give so willingly in this way? For all things come from you, so that we have given you what is already yours.
Then Yeshua looked up, and as he watched the rich placing their gifts into the Temple offering-boxes,Then he told them, “Peoples will fight each other, nations will fight each other, there will be great earthquakes, there will be epidemics and famines in various places, and there will be fearful sights and great signs from Heaven. But before all this, they will arrest you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues and prisons; and you will be brought before kings and governors. This will all be on account of me,but it will prove an opportunity for you to bear witness. So make up your minds not to worry, rehearsing your defense beforehand;for I myself will give you an eloquence and a wisdom that no adversary will be able to resist or refute. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends; some of you they will have put to death;and everyone will hate you because of me.But not a hair of your head will be lost.By standing firm you will save your lives.he also saw a poor widow put in two small coins.“However, when you see Yerushalayim surrounded by armies, then you are to understand that she is about to be destroyed. Those in Y’hudah must escape to the hills, those inside the city must get out, and those in the country must not enter it.For these are the days of vengeance, when everything that has been written in the Tanakh will come true. What a terrible time it will be for pregnant women and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress in the Land and judgment on the people. Some will fall by the edge of the sword, others will be carried into all the countries of the Goyim, and Yerushalayim will be trampled down by the Goyim until the age of the Goyim has run its course.“There will appear signs in the sun, moon and stars; and on earth, nations will be in anxiety and bewilderment at the sound and surge of the sea,as people faint with fear at the prospect of what is overtaking the world; for the powers in heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with tremendous power and glory. When these things start to happen, stand up and hold your heads high; because you are about to be liberated!”Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, Indeed, all the trees. He said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all the others. As soon as they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves that summer is near.In the same way, when you see these things taking place, you are to know that the Kingdom of God is near!Yes! I tell you that this people will certainly not pass away before it has all happened.Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away.“But keep watch on yourselves, or your hearts will become dulled by carousing, drunkenness and the worries of everyday living, and that Day will be sprung upon you suddenly like a trap! For it will close in on everyone, no matter where they live, throughout the whole world.Stay alert, always praying that you will have the strength to escape all the things that will happen and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man.”Yeshua spent his days at the Temple, teaching; while at night he went out and stayed on the hill called the Mount of Olives. All the people would rise with the dawn to come and hear him at the Temple courts. For they, out of their wealth, have contributed money they could easily spare; but she, out of her poverty, has given all she had to live on.”
I exhort you, therefore, brothers, in view of God’s mercies, to offer yourselves as a sacrifice, living and set apart for God. This will please him; it is the logical “Temple worship” for you.
“Tell the people of Isra’el to take up a collection for me — accept a contribution from anyone who wholeheartedly wants to give.
you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be cohanim set apart for God to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to him through Yeshua the Messiah.
As soon as the order was issued, the people of Isra’el gave in abundance from the firstfruits of the grain, wine, olive oil, honey and other agricultural produce; they brought the required tenth and more.
Those who sow in tears will reap with cries of joy.He who goes out weeping as he carries his sack of seed will come home with cries of joy as he carries his sheaves of grain.
Every week, on Motza’ei-Shabbat, each of you should set some money aside, according to his resources, and save it up; so that when I come I won’t have to do fundraising.
For if the eagerness to give is there, the acceptability of the gift will be measured by what you have, not by what you don’t have.
So if you, even though you are bad, know how to give your children gifts that are good, how much more will your Father in heaven keep giving good things to those who keep asking him!
Adonai is God, and he gives us light. Join in the pilgrim festival with branches all the way to the horns of the altar.
Whatever work you do, put yourself into it, as those who are serving not merely other people, but the Lord.Remember that as your reward, you will receive the inheritance from the Lord. You are slaving for the Lord, for the Messiah.
Don’t delude yourselves: no one makes a fool of God! A person reaps what he sows. Those who keep sowing in the field of their old nature, in order to meet its demands, will eventually reap ruin; but those who keep sowing in the field of the Spirit will reap from the Spirit everlasting life.So let us not grow weary of doing what is good; for if we don’t give up, we will in due time reap the harvest.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, enter his courtyards with praise; give thanks to him, and bless his name.
“Here is the sort of fast I want — releasing those unjustly bound, untying the thongs of the yoke, letting the oppressed go free, breaking every yoke, sharing your food with the hungry, taking the homeless poor into your house, clothing the naked when you see them, fulfilling your duty to your kinsmen!”
By trusting, Hevel offered a greater sacrifice than Kayin; because of this, he was attested as righteous, with God giving him this testimony on the ground of his gifts. Through having trusted, he still continues to speak, even though he is dead.
But now I am going to Yerushalayim with aid for God’s people there. For Macedonia and Achaia thought it would be good to make some contribution to the poor among God’s people in Yerushalayim.
Charge them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, to be generous and ready to share. In this way they will treasure up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may lay hold of the real life.
How can I repay Adonai for all his generous dealings with me?I will raise the cup of salvation and call on the name of Adonai.I will pay my vows to Adonai in the presence of all his people.
If someone has worldly possessions and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how can he be loving God?Children, let us love not with words and talk, but with actions and in reality!
Through him, therefore, let us offer God a sacrifice of praise continually. For this is the natural product of lips that acknowledge his name.
[The righteous] cried out, and Adonai heard, and he saved them from all their troubles.Adonai is near those with broken hearts; he saves those whose spirit is crushed.
If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?
shepherd the flock of God that is in your care, exercising oversight not out of constraint, but willingly, as God wants; and not out of a desire for dishonest gain, but with enthusiasm;also not as machers domineering over those in your care, but as people who become examples to the flock.
The oppressor of the poor insults his maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.
Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father who made the heavenly lights; with him there is neither variation nor darkness caused by turning.
In everything give thanks, for this is what God wants from you who are united with the Messiah Yeshua.
