108 Offering and Tithes

108 Offering and Tithes

Think about this: Christ loved us so much that he gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering to God.1 He made the ultimate sacrifice for you on the cross, loving you to death and beyond. Even as time marches on, His love stays constant.

It's so important for you to grasp that the biggest sacrifice has already been made. But now, you get to be a pleasing offering to God, too. Let your service, your honor, and your giving be a delight to your Heavenly Father. Know that Jesus has given you everything, and anything you offer pales in comparison to His love.

Giving to God, supporting His work, it's an expression of love. Don't see it as a burden or an obligation, but as a response to God's love and Jesus' sacrifice. It's a way of saying "thank you" for everything Heaven has poured into your life.

1Ephesians 5:2

Luke 21:1-4

Jesus looked around and saw rich people dropping their gifts in the Temple treasury,He went on to say, “Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. There will be terrible earthquakes, famines, and plagues everywhere; there will be strange and terrifying things coming from the sky. Before all these things take place, however, you will be arrested and persecuted; you will be handed over to be tried in synagogues and be put in prison; you will be brought before kings and rulers for my sake. This will be your chance to tell the Good News.Make up your minds ahead of time not to worry about how you will defend yourselves, because I will give you such words and wisdom that none of your enemies will be able to refute or contradict what you say.You will be handed over by your parents, your brothers, your relatives, and your friends; and some of you will be put to death.Everyone will hate you because of me.But not a single hair from your heads will be lost.Stand firm, and you will save yourselves.and he also saw a very poor widow dropping in two little copper coins.“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that it will soon be destroyed. Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills; those who are in the city must leave, and those who are out in the country must not go into the city. For those will be ‘The Days of Punishment,’ to make come true all that the Scriptures say.How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies! Terrible distress will come upon this land, and God's punishment will fall on this people. Some will be killed by the sword, and others will be taken as prisoners to all countries; and the heathen will trample over Jerusalem until their time is up.“There will be strange things happening to the sun, the moon, and the stars. On earth whole countries will be in despair, afraid of the roar of the sea and the raging tides.People will faint from fear as they wait for what is coming over the whole earth, for the powers in space will be driven from their courses. Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near.”Then Jesus told them this parable: “Think of the fig tree and all the other trees. He said, “I tell you that this poor widow put in more than all the others. When you see their leaves beginning to appear, you know that summer is near.In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that the Kingdom of God is about to come.“Remember that all these things will take place before the people now living have all died.Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.“Be careful not to let yourselves become occupied with too much feasting and drinking and with the worries of this life, or that Day may suddenly catch youlike a trap. For it will come upon all people everywhere on earth.Be on watch and pray always that you will have the strength to go safely through all those things that will happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”Jesus spent those days teaching in the Temple, and when evening came, he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives.Early each morning all the people went to the Temple to listen to him.For the others offered their gifts from what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, gave all she had to live on.”

Hebrews 7:1-2

This Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of the Most High God. As Abraham was coming back from the battle in which he defeated the four kings, Melchizedek met him and blessed him,For Levi had not yet been born, but was, so to speak, in the body of his ancestor Abraham when Melchizedek met him.It was on the basis of the levitical priesthood that the Law was given to the people of Israel. Now, if the work of the levitical priests had been perfect, there would have been no need for a different kind of priest to appear, one who is in the priestly order of Melchizedek, not of Aaron. For when the priesthood is changed, there also has to be a change in the law.And our Lord, of whom these things are said, belonged to a different tribe, and no member of his tribe ever served as a priest. It is well known that he was born a member of the tribe of Judah; and Moses did not mention this tribe when he spoke of priests. The matter becomes even plainer; a different priest has appeared, who is like Melchizedek. He was made a priest, not by human rules and regulations, but through the power of a life which has no end.For the scripture says, “You will be a priest forever, in the priestly order of Melchizedek.”The old rule, then, is set aside, because it was weak and useless. For the Law of Moses could not make anything perfect. And now a better hope has been provided through which we come near to God.and Abraham gave him one tenth of all he had taken. (The first meaning of Melchizedek's name is “King of Righteousness”; and because he was king of Salem, his name also means “King of Peace.”)

Matthew 6:2-4

“So when you give something to a needy person, do not make a big show of it, as the hypocrites do in the houses of worship and on the streets. They do it so that people will praise them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.Instead, store up riches for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and robbers cannot break in and steal. For your heart will always be where your riches are.“The eyes are like a lamp for the body. If your eyes are sound, your whole body will be full of light;but if your eyes are no good, your body will be in darkness. So if the light in you is darkness, how terribly dark it will be!“You cannot be a slave of two masters; you will hate one and love the other; you will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.“This is why I tell you: do not be worried about the food and drink you need in order to stay alive, or about clothes for your body. After all, isn't life worth more than food? And isn't the body worth more than clothes?Look at the birds: they do not plant seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns; yet your Father in heaven takes care of them! Aren't you worth much more than birds? Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it? “And why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow: they do not work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers. But when you help a needy person, do it in such a way that even your closest friend will not know about it.It is God who clothes the wild grass—grass that is here today and gone tomorrow, burned up in the oven. Won't he be all the more sure to clothe you? What little faith you have!“So do not start worrying: ‘Where will my food come from? or my drink? or my clothes?’(These are the things the pagans are always concerned about.) Your Father in heaven knows that you need all these things.Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what he requires of you, and he will provide you with all these other things. So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings. Then it will be a private matter. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.

Happy are those who are concerned for the poor; the Lord will help them when they are in trouble.Be merciful to me, Lord, and restore my health, and I will pay my enemies back. They will not triumph over me, and I will know that you are pleased with me.You will help me, because I do what is right; you will keep me in your presence forever.Praise the Lord, the God of Israel! Praise him now and forever! Amen! Amen! The Lord will protect them and preserve their lives; he will make them happy in the land; he will not abandon them to the power of their enemies.

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up riches for yourselves here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and robbers break in and steal.“So when you give something to a needy person, do not make a big show of it, as the hypocrites do in the houses of worship and on the streets. They do it so that people will praise them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.Instead, store up riches for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and robbers cannot break in and steal. For your heart will always be where your riches are.

2 Corinthians 8:1-5

Our friends, we want you to know what God's grace has accomplished in the churches in Macedonia. My opinion is that it is better for you to finish now what you began last year. You were the first, not only to act, but also to be willing to act.On with it, then, and finish the job! Be as eager to finish it as you were to plan it, and do it with what you now have.If you are eager to give, God will accept your gift on the basis of what you have to give, not on what you don't have.I am not trying to relieve others by putting a burden on you; but since you have plenty at this time, it is only fair that you should help those who are in need. Then, when you are in need and they have plenty, they will help you. In this way both are treated equally. As the scripture says, “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.” How we thank God for making Titus as eager as we are to help you!Not only did he welcome our request; he was so eager to help that of his own free will he decided to go to you. With him we are sending the brother who is highly respected in all the churches for his work in preaching the gospel. And besides that, he has been chosen and appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this service of love for the sake of the Lord's glory and in order to show that we want to help. They have been severely tested by the troubles they went through; but their joy was so great that they were extremely generous in their giving, even though they are very poor.We are being careful not to stir up any complaints about the way we handle this generous gift. Our purpose is to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of others. So we are sending our brother with them; we have tested him many times and found him always very eager to help. And now that he has so much confidence in you, he is all the more eager to help.As for Titus, he is my partner and works with me to help you; as for the other brothers who are going with him, they represent the churches and bring glory to Christ.Show your love to them, so that all the churches will be sure of it and know that we are right in boasting about you.I can assure you that they gave as much as they could, and even more than they could. Of their own free willthey begged us and pleaded for the privilege of having a part in helping God's people in Judea. It was more than we could have hoped for! First they gave themselves to the Lord; and then, by God's will they gave themselves to us as well.

Prayer

Eternal Father, You are exalted, for everything in heaven and earth bows before You. In Jesus' name, I thank You for Your goodness to me, for each and every blessing. One of these was the sacrifice Jesus made for me on the cross. Your body, Lord, was broken, and You carried the weight of my peace upon Yourself, offering Yourself as a fragrant sacrifice to God. Thank You, Jesus, for this undeserved gift of giving Your life to atone for my sins, cleansing me and freeing my soul from torment. Beloved Father, help me to live gratefully, loving You for what You’ve done in me, and sharing that love with those around me, because it is written: "And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." My offering to You each day will be a heart willing to seek Your face and a contrite and humble spirit. I don't have much to offer, but I present my life before You that Your will may be done in it. Guide my steps, Holy Spirit, that all my ways may be pleasing to God. In Jesus' name, Amen.
