49 Bible Verses about The Provision of Food

49 Bible Verses about The Provision of Food

Food is something I think about a lot, and it's all over the Bible too. Right from the beginning, in Genesis, it talks about fruits and plants as nourishment. There's a lot in the Old Testament about which foods are okay to eat and which aren't.

I'm also really struck by how many times in the New Testament Jesus shares meals with his followers. It feels like such a powerful image of connection and community. And the idea of treating our bodies like temples of the Holy Spirit– that really makes me think about what I'm putting into mine.

It's like food isn't just about keeping us going physically, you know? It's a way to connect with God and with each other. It's something to be mindful of and grateful for.

Luke 12:22-23

And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.

Exodus 16:12-15

“I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread, so that you shall know that I am Yahweh your God.’ ” So it happened at evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. Then the layer of dew evaporated, and behold, on the surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. And the sons of Israel saw it and said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread which Yahweh has given you to eat.

Leviticus 26:4-5

then I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will give forth its produce and the trees of the field will give forth their fruit. ‘If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also how they walked in hostility against Me— I also was walking in hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies—or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that they then make up for their iniquity, then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. For the land will be forsaken by them and will make up for its sabbaths while it is made desolate without them. They, meanwhile, will be making up for their iniquity because they rejected My judgments and their soul loathed My statutes. Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so loathe them as to bring an end to them, breaking My covenant with them; for I am Yahweh their God. But I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am Yahweh.’ ” These are the statutes and judgments and laws which Yahweh has given to be between Himself and the sons of Israel by the hand of Moses at Mount Sinai. Indeed, your threshing will last for you until grape gathering, and grape gathering will last until sowing time. You will thus eat your food to the full and live securely in your land.

Prayer

Good and eternal God, Most High! I praise you for you are just, holy, and worthy of all supreme praise and adoration. Father, thank you for making all things good and creating the best for humankind. You blessed us with the fruit of the earth and gave us food for our benefit. I ask that you help me be responsible with my body, for it is also a temple, a dwelling place for your Holy Spirit. Teach me to be mindful of what I eat, to care for my body, to make good use of food, and to have a healthy and balanced diet. Help me to avoid deliberately consuming harmful foods that will only bring sickness and ill health. In Jesus' name, Amen.
