You know, it's important to remember that evil is a real thing in this world. As we live out our faith, it's key to realize we're not just battling human ideas, but actual forces of darkness.
Ephesians 6:121 puts it this way: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Satan has legions of demons doing his bidding, actively working to undermine God's plan.
But here's the thing: Christ has given the church authority over these forces of darkness. God expects us to be aware and stand firm against the enemy, rebuking them in Jesus' name. There's no other name on earth more powerful than the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak in new languages;
Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
And Jesus rebuked the demon, and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us through thy name.And he said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.Behold, I give to you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject to you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
And when he had called to him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness, and all manner of disease.
Then was brought to him one possessed with a demon, blind and dumb; and he healed him, so that the blind and dumb both spoke and saw.
So that from his body were brought to the sick, handkerchiefs, or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
Behold, I give to you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
And he healed many that were sick with divers diseases, and cast out many demons; and suffered not the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and tremble.
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of demons.
Then the demons went out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
And the spirit cried, and rent him severely, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; so that many said, He is dead.
And this she did many days. But Paul being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
And all the demons besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea (they were about two thousand) and were choked in the sea.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
How much then is a man better than a sheep? wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
So the demons besought him, saying, If thou expellest us, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
And the LORD said to Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
And having despoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
And the God of peace will soon bruise Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is from me, saith the LORD.
When the evening was come, they brought to him many that were possessed with demons: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick;
And he was casting out a demon, and it was dumb. And it came to pass when the demon was gone out, the dumb spoke; and the people wondered.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Since then the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;And deliver them, who, through fear of death, were all their life-time subject to bondage.
Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:And put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.
And they were all amazed, and spoke among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.And the fame of him went out into every place of the surrounding country.
And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?And the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Therefore will we not fear, though the earth shall be removed, and though the mountains shall be carried into the midst of the sea;Though its waters shall roar and be disturbed, though the mountains shake with the swelling of it. Selah.
As thy went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a demon.And when the demon was cast out, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes marveled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
We know that whoever is born of God, sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God, keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
What, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have from God, and ye are not your own?For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.
Stand fast therefore in the liberty with which Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by my arms.
Now thanks be to God, who always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor of his knowledge by us in every place.
And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant to thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,By stretching forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
But he was wounded for our transgression, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying to him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
Now to him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.
And Jesus came, and spoke to them, saying, All power is given to me in heaven and upon earth.
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth, is not made perfect in love.
Or else, how can one enter into a strong man's house, and seize his goods, except he shall first bind the strong man? and then he will plunder his house.
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places, in Christ Jesus:
And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his beloved Son:
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Rejoice evermore.Pray without ceasing.In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Wherefore take to you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me to his heavenly kingdom; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
I have written to you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised:
Come to me, all ye that labor, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me: for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest to your souls.For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Trust in the LORD with all thy heart; and lean not to thy own understanding.In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect will of God.
Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name we will tread them under that rise up against us.
For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say to you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed, ye shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you.
And he spoke a parable to them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
To the chief Musician, A Psalm or Song of David. Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.
Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature: old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by them that heard him;
In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
And I say also to thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church: and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:And if we know that he heareth us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired from him.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him.
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Being confident of this very thing, that he who hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
For which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him against that day.
Thou art my hiding place; thou wilt preserve me from trouble; thou wilt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
