When you face hurts, you can find real comfort and guidance in Scripture. God's word reminds us that He is our refuge and strength, especially when things get tough.
Facing hurts with humility and forgiveness can truly heal your wounds and restore relationships. Loving your neighbor is a fundamental command, and that includes loving your enemies and blessing those who persecute you. I know it's a challenge, but it's part of what God calls us to as His followers.
The Bible teaches us that offenses are just a part of life. But it also encourages us to handle them in a way that honors God and leads to reconciliation. In Matthew 18:21-22, Jesus gives us key instruction on forgiveness: "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’"
This passage tells me that Jesus wants us to have hearts that don't hold onto bitterness and resentment. He wants us to forgive others, just as our Heavenly Father has forgiven us.
Christ did not think only of himself. Rather, as Scripture says, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”
“So if you are offering your gift at the altar and remember there that another believer has something against you, leave your gift at the altar. First go away and make peace with that person. Then come back and offer your gift.
⌞Nehemiah prayed,⌟ “Our God, hear us. We are despised. Turn their insults back on them, and let them be robbed in the land where they are prisoners.
I will no longer let you hear the insults from the nations. You will no longer suffer the disgrace of the people. You will never again take the children away from your own nation, declares the Almighty Lord.’ ”
Be kind to each other, sympathetic, forgiving each other as God has forgiven you through Christ.
His mouth is full of cursing, deception, and oppression. Trouble and wrongdoing are on the tip of his tongue.
Put up with each other, and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Jacob’s sons came in from the open country as soon as they heard the news. The men felt outraged and very angry because Shechem had committed such a godless act against Israel’s family by raping Jacob’s daughter. This shouldn’t have happened.
David asked the men who were standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and gets rid of Israel’s disgrace? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should challenge the army of the living God?”
When David heard Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord, who defended me against the insults of Nabal and kept me from doing wrong. The Lord has turned Nabal’s own wickedness back on him.” Then David sent men ⌞on his behalf⌟ to propose marriage to Abigail.
With a shattering blow to my bones, my enemies taunt me. They ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”
“If a believer does something wrong, go, confront him when the two of you are alone. If he listens to you, you have won back that believer.
Don’t pay people back with evil for the evil they do to you, or ridicule those who ridicule you. Instead, bless them, because you were called to inherit a blessing.
Indeed, devotion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
You know that I have been insulted, put to shame, and humiliated. All my opponents are in front of you.
“If you forgive the failures of others, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failures.
So let’s stop criticizing each other. Instead, you should decide never to do anything that would make other Christians have doubts or lose their faith.
Insults have broken my heart, and I am sick. I looked for sympathy, but there was none. I looked for people to comfort me, but I found no one.
So watch yourselves! “If a believer sins, correct him. If he changes the way he thinks and acts, forgive him.The day when the Son of Man is revealed will be like that.“On that day those who are on the roof shouldn’t come down to get their belongings out of their houses. Those who are in the field shouldn’t turn back.Remember Lot’s wife! Those who try to save their lives will lose them, and those who lose their lives will save them.“I can guarantee that on that night if two people are in one bed, one will be taken and the other one will be left. Two women will be grinding grain together. One will be taken, and the other one will be left.” They asked him, “Where, Lord?” Jesus told them, “Vultures will gather wherever there is a dead body.”Even if he wrongs you seven times in one day and comes back to you seven times and says that he is sorry, forgive him.”
Pay each one of our neighbors back with seven times the number of insults they used to insult you, O Lord.
Remember this, my dear brothers and sisters: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and should not get angry easily. My brothers and sisters, be very happy when you are tested in different ways.An angry person doesn’t do what God approves of.
Remove the insults and contempt that have fallen on me because I have obeyed your written instructions.
“Stop judging so that you will not be judged.Or if your child asks for a fish, would you give him a snake?Even though you’re evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. So how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him?“Always do for other people everything you want them to do for you. That is ⌞the meaning of⌟ Moses’ Teachings and the Prophets.“Enter through the narrow gate because the gate and road that lead to destruction are wide. Many enter through the wide gate. But the narrow gate and the road that lead to life are full of trouble. Only a few people find the narrow gate.“Beware of false prophets. They come to you disguised as sheep, but in their hearts they are vicious wolves. You will know them by what they produce. “People don’t pick grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles, do they?In the same way every good tree produces good fruit, but a rotten tree produces bad fruit.A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a rotten tree cannot produce good fruit.Any tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into a fire.Otherwise, you will be judged by the same standard you use to judge others. The standards you use for others will be applied to you.
An adulterous man will find disease and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be blotted out,
When a stubborn fool is irritated, he shows it immediately, but a sensible person hides the insult.
Whoever forgives an offense seeks love, but whoever keeps bringing up the issue separates the closest of friends.
A person with good sense is patient, and it is to his credit that he overlooks an offense.
The right thing to do is to avoid eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that causes another Christian to have doubts.
A saying: If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, her first husband shouldn’t go back to her again. The land would become thoroughly polluted. “You have acted like a prostitute who has many lovers. And now you want to come back to me!” declares the Lord.
Don’t cause others to stumble, whether they are Jewish, Greek, or members of God’s church.
They should turn their cheeks to the one who strikes them and take their fill of insults.
“The king will do as he pleases. He will highly honor himself above every god. He will say amazing things against the God of gods. He will succeed until God’s anger is over, because what has been decided must be done.
Pleasant words are ⌞like⌟ honey from a honeycomb— sweet to the spirit and healthy for the body.
“I have heard the insults from Moab and the mockery from Ammon. They insulted my people and bragged about their territory.
Then the chief priest tore his robes in horror and said, “He has dishonored God! Why do we need any more witnesses? You’ve just heard him dishonor God!
Don’t act out of selfish ambition or be conceited. Instead, humbly think of others as being better than yourselves. He risked his life and almost died for the work of Christ in order to make up for the help you couldn’t give me.Don’t be concerned only about your own interests, but also be concerned about the interests of others.
The Jews answered Jesus, “We’re going to stone you to death, not for any good things you’ve done, but for dishonoring God. You claim to be God, although you’re only a man.”
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked him, “Lord, how often do I have to forgive a believer who wrongs me? Seven times?”Jesus answered him, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy times seven.
There is lasting peace for those who love your teachings. Nothing can make those people stumble.
It isn’t rude. It doesn’t think about itself. It isn’t irritable. It doesn’t keep track of wrongs.
As holy people whom God has chosen and loved, be sympathetic, kind, humble, gentle, and patient.Put up with each other, and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
So get rid of every kind of evil, every kind of deception, hypocrisy, jealousy, and every kind of slander.
Starting a quarrel is ⌞like⌟ opening a floodgate, so stop before the argument gets out of control.
“Always do for other people everything you want them to do for you. That is ⌞the meaning of⌟ Moses’ Teachings and the Prophets.
But if you criticize and attack each other, be careful that you don’t destroy each other.
Live in love as Christ also loved us. He gave his life for us as an offering and sacrifice, a soothing aroma to God.
Try to live peacefully with everyone, and try to live holy lives, because if you don’t, you will not see the Lord.
Make sure that no one ever pays back one wrong with another wrong. Instead, always try to do what is good for each other and everyone else.
A servant of the Lord must not quarrel. Instead, he must be kind to everyone. He must be a good teacher. He must be willing to suffer wrong.
Dear friends, we must love each other because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born from God and knows God.The person who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, because God is love.
So those of us who have a strong ⌞faith⌟ must be patient with the weaknesses of those whose ⌞faith⌟ is not so strong. We must not think only of ourselves. And Scripture says again, “You nations, be happy together with his people!”And again, “Praise the Lord, all you nations! Praise him, all you people of the world!”Again, Isaiah says, “There will be a root from Jesse. He will rise to rule the nations, and he will give the nations hope.”May God, the source of hope, fill you with joy and peace through your faith in him. Then you will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.I’m convinced, brothers and sisters, that you, too, are filled with goodness. I’m also convinced that you have all the knowledge you need and that you are able to instruct each other. However, I’ve written you a letter, parts of which are rather bold, as a reminder to you. I’m doing this because God gave me the giftto be a servant of Christ Jesus to people who are not Jewish. I serve as a priest by spreading the Good News of God. I do this in order that I might bring the nations to God as an acceptable offering, made holy by the Holy Spirit. So Christ Jesus gives me the right to brag about what I’m doing for God.I’m bold enough to tell you only what Christ has done through me to bring people who are not Jewish to obedience. By what I have said and done,by the power of miraculous and amazing signs, and by the power of God’s Spirit, I have finished spreading the Good News about Christ from Jerusalem to Illyricum. We should all be concerned about our neighbor and the good things that will build his faith.
A person who despises a neighbor has no sense, but a person who has understanding keeps quiet.
However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure. Then it is peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good deeds, impartial, and sincere.A harvest that has God’s approval comes from the peace planted by peacemakers.
Don’t pay people back with evil for the evil they do to you. Focus your thoughts on those things that are considered noble. As much as it is possible, live in peace with everyone.Don’t take revenge, dear friends. Instead, let God’s anger take care of it. After all, Scripture says, “I alone have the right to take revenge. I will pay back, says the Lord.”
An offended brother is more ⌞resistant⌟ than a strong city, and disputes are like the locked gate of a castle tower.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’But I tell you not to oppose an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn your other cheek to him as well.
Do not say, “I’ll treat him as he treated me. I’ll pay him back for what he has done to me.”
Don’t say anything that would hurt ⌞another person⌟. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you.
But dedicate your lives to Christ as Lord. Always be ready to defend your confidence ⌞in God⌟ when anyone asks you to explain it. However, make your defense with gentleness and respect.Keep your conscience clear. Then those who treat the good Christian life you live with contempt will feel ashamed that they have ridiculed you.
Everything you say should be kind and well thought out so that you know how to answer everyone.
Brothers and sisters, if a person gets trapped by wrongdoing, those of you who are spiritual should help that person turn away from doing wrong. Do it in a gentle way. At the same time watch yourself so that you also are not tempted.
If you forgive someone, so do I. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did in the presence of Christ for your benefit.I don’t want Satan to outwit us. After all, we are not ignorant about Satan’s scheming.
If a person thinks that he is religious but can’t control his tongue, he is fooling himself. That person’s religion is worthless.
Better to get angry slowly than to be a hero. Better to be even-tempered than to capture a city.
“People who want to live a full life and enjoy good days must keep their tongues from saying evil things, and their lips from speaking deceitful things. They must turn away from evil and do good. They must seek peace and pursue it.
How horrible it will be for the world because it causes people to lose their faith. Situations that cause people to lose their faith will arise. How horrible it will be for the person who causes someone to lose his faith!
Welcome people who are weak in faith, but don’t get into an argument over differences of opinion.
But be careful that by using your freedom you don’t somehow make a believer who is weak in faith fall into sin.
Jesus told his disciples, “Situations that cause people to lose their faith are certain to arise. But how horrible it will be for the person who causes someone to lose his faith!
Therefore, if eating food ⌞offered to false gods⌟ causes other believers to lose their faith, I will never eat that kind of food so that I won’t make other believers lose their faith.
“These little ones believe in me. It would be best for the person who causes one of them to lose faith to be drowned in the sea with a large stone hung around his neck.
A person who has a hot temper will pay for it. If you rescue him, you will have to do it over and over.
“I can guarantee that on judgment day people will have to give an account of every careless word they say.By your words you will be declared innocent, or by your words you will be declared guilty.”
You are already totally defeated because you have lawsuits against each other. Why don’t you accept the fact that you have been wronged? Why don’t you accept that you have been cheated?Instead, you do wrong and cheat, and you do this to other believers.
Fathers, don’t make your children bitter about life. Instead, bring them up in Christian discipline and instruction.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, lie, and say all kinds of evil things about you because of me.
Brothers and sisters, stop complaining about each other, or you will be condemned. Realize that the judge is standing at the door.
A person of great understanding is patient, but a short temper is the height of stupidity.
Be humble and gentle in every way. Be patient with each other and lovingly accept each other. But that is not what you learned from Christ’s teachings. You have certainly heard his message and have been taught his ways. The truth is in Jesus. You were taught to change the way you were living. The person you used to be will ruin you through desires that deceive you. However, you were taught to have a new attitude. You were also taught to become a new person created to be like God, with a life that truly has God’s approval and is holy.So then, get rid of lies. Speak the truth to each other, because we are all members of the same body.Be angry without sinning. Don’t go to bed angry.Don’t give the devil any opportunity ⌞to work⌟.Thieves must quit stealing and, instead, they must work hard. They should do something good with their hands so that they’ll have something to share with those in need.Don’t say anything that would hurt ⌞another person⌟. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you.Through the peace that ties you together, do your best to maintain the unity that the Spirit gives.
Someone may say, “I’m allowed to do anything,” but not everything is helpful. I’m allowed to do anything, but not everything encourages growth.People should be concerned about others and not just about themselves.
Why do you criticize or despise other Christians? Everyone will stand in front of God to be judged.
Christ never verbally abused those who verbally abused him. When he suffered, he didn’t make any threats but left everything to the one who judges fairly.
When a person’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love to talk will have to eat their own words.
“I’m giving you a new commandment: Love each other in the same way that I have loved you.Everyone will know that you are my disciples because of your love for each other.”
Those who love other believers live in the light. Nothing will destroy the faith of those who live in the light.
A person is delighted to hear an answer from his own mouth, and a timely word—oh, how good!
