When you face hurts, you can find real comfort and guidance in Scripture. God's word reminds us that He is our refuge and strength, especially when things get tough.
Facing hurts with humility and forgiveness can truly heal your wounds and restore relationships. Loving your neighbor is a fundamental command, and that includes loving your enemies and blessing those who persecute you. I know it's a challenge, but it's part of what God calls us to as His followers.
The Bible teaches us that offenses are just a part of life. But it also encourages us to handle them in a way that honors God and leads to reconciliation. In Matthew 18:21-22, Jesus gives us key instruction on forgiveness: "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’"
This passage tells me that Jesus wants us to have hearts that don't hold onto bitterness and resentment. He wants us to forgive others, just as our Heavenly Father has forgiven us.
For Christ did not please himself. Instead, as the scripture says, “The insults which are hurled at you have fallen on me.”
So if you are about to offer your gift to God at the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God.
I prayed, “Hear how they make fun of us, O God! Let their ridicule fall on their own heads. Let them be robbed of everything they have, and let them be taken as prisoners to a foreign land.
The land will no longer have to listen to the nations making fun of it or see the peoples sneer at it. The land will no longer rob the nation of its children. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken.”
Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ.
Their speech is filled with curses, lies, and threats; they are quick to speak hateful, evil words.
Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you.
just as Jacob's sons were coming in from the fields. When they heard about it, they were shocked and furious that Shechem had done such a thing and had insulted the people of Israel by raping Jacob's daughter.
David asked the men who were near him, “What will the man get who kills this Philistine and frees Israel from this disgrace? After all, who is this heathen Philistine to defy the army of the living God?”
When David heard that Nabal had died, he said, “Praise the Lord! He has taken revenge on Nabal for insulting me and has kept me his servant from doing wrong. The Lord has punished Nabal for his evil.” Then David sent a proposal of marriage to Abigail.
“If your brother sins against you, go to him and show him his fault. But do it privately, just between yourselves. If he listens to you, you have won your brother back.
Do not pay back evil with evil or cursing with cursing; instead, pay back with a blessing, because a blessing is what God promised to give you when he called you.
My devotion to your Temple burns in me like a fire; the insults which are hurled at you fall on me.
“If you forgive others the wrongs they have done to you, your Father in heaven will also forgive you.But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive the wrongs you have done.
So then, let us stop judging one another. Instead, you should decide never to do anything that would make others stumble or fall into sin.
Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I had hoped for sympathy, but there was none; for comfort, but I found none.
So watch what you do! “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. That is how it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.“On that day someone who is on the roof of a house must not go down into the house to get any belongings; in the same way anyone who is out in the field must not go back to the house.Remember Lot's wife! Those who try to save their own life will lose it; those who lose their life will save it.On that night, I tell you, there will be two people sleeping in the same bed: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind. Two women will be grinding meal together: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind.” The disciples asked him, “Where, Lord?” Jesus answered, “Wherever there is a dead body, the vultures will gather.”If he sins against you seven times in one day, and each time he comes to you saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
Lord, pay the other nations back seven times for all the insults they have hurled at you.
Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry. My friends, consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come your way,Human anger does not achieve God's righteous purpose.
“Do not judge others, so that God will not judge you,Or would you give him a snake when he asks for a fish?As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!“Do for others what you want them to do for you: this is the meaning of the Law of Moses and of the teachings of the prophets. “Go in through the narrow gate, because the gate to hell is wide and the road that leads to it is easy, and there are many who travel it.But the gate to life is narrow and the way that leads to it is hard, and there are few people who find it.“Be on your guard against false prophets; they come to you looking like sheep on the outside, but on the inside they are really like wild wolves. You will know them by what they do. Thorn bushes do not bear grapes, and briers do not bear figs.A healthy tree bears good fruit, but a poor tree bears bad fruit.A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a poor tree cannot bear good fruit. And any tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire.for God will judge you in the same way you judge others, and he will apply to you the same rules you apply to others.
If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day.
When a fool is annoyed, he quickly lets it be known. Smart people will ignore an insult.
If you want people to like you, forgive them when they wrong you. Remembering wrongs can break up a friendship.
If you are sensible, you will control your temper. When someone wrongs you, it is a great virtue to ignore it.
Get rid of a conceited person, and then there will be no more arguments, quarreling, or name-calling.
The right thing to do is to keep from eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that will make other believers fall.
The Lord says, “If a man divorces his wife, and she leaves him and becomes another man's wife, he cannot take her back again. This would completely defile the land. But, Israel, you have had many lovers, and now you want to return to me!
Live in such a way as to cause no trouble either to Jews or Gentiles or to the church of God.
“The king of Syria will do as he pleases. He will boast that he is greater than any god, superior even to the Supreme God. He will be able to do this until the time when God punishes him. God will do exactly what he has planned.
The Lord Almighty says, “I have heard the people of Moab and Ammon insulting and taunting my people, and boasting that they would seize their land.
At this the High Priest tore his clothes and said, “Blasphemy! We don't need any more witnesses! You have just heard his blasphemy!
Don't do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble toward one another, always considering others better than yourselves.because he risked his life and nearly died for the sake of the work of Christ, in order to give me the help that you yourselves could not give. And look out for one another's interests, not just for your own.
They answered, “We do not want to stone you because of any good deeds, but because of your blasphemy! You are only a man, but you are trying to make yourself God!”
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, if my brother keeps on sinning against me, how many times do I have to forgive him? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” answered Jesus, “but seventy times seven,
Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort.
Those who love your law have perfect security, and there is nothing that can make them fall.
So then, we must always aim at those things that bring peace and that help strengthen one another.
love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs;
You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you.
Rid yourselves, then, of all evil; no more lying or hypocrisy or jealousy or insulting language.
The start of an argument is like the first break in a dam; stop it before it goes any further.
“Do for others what you want them to do for you: this is the meaning of the Law of Moses and of the teachings of the prophets.
But if you act like wild animals, hurting and harming each other, then watch out, or you will completely destroy one another.
Your life must be controlled by love, just as Christ loved us and gave his life for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice that pleases God.
Try to be at peace with everyone, and try to live a holy life, because no one will see the Lord without it.
See that no one pays back wrong for wrong, but at all times make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people.
As the Lord's servant, you must not quarrel. You must be kind toward all, a good and patient teacher,
Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God.Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.
We who are strong in the faith ought to help the weak to carry their burdens. We should not please ourselves.Again it says, “Rejoice, Gentiles, with God's people!”And again, “Praise the Lord, all Gentiles; praise him, all peoples!”And again, Isaiah says, “A descendant of Jesse will appear; he will come to rule the Gentiles, and they will put their hope in him.”May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit. My friends: I myself feel sure that you are full of goodness, that you have all knowledge, and that you are able to teach one another. But in this letter I have been quite bold about certain subjects of which I have reminded you. I have been bold because of the privilege God has given meof being a servant of Christ Jesus to work for the Gentiles. I serve like a priest in preaching the Good News from God, in order that the Gentiles may be an offering acceptable to God, dedicated to him by the Holy Spirit. In union with Christ Jesus, then, I can be proud of my service for God.I will be bold and speak only about what Christ has done through me to lead the Gentiles to obey God. He has done this by means of words and deeds,by the power of miracles and wonders, and by the power of the Spirit of God. And so, in traveling all the way from Jerusalem to Illyricum, I have proclaimed fully the Good News about Christ.Instead, we should all please other believers for their own good, in order to build them up in the faith.
But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. And goodness is the harvest that is produced from the seeds the peacemakers plant in peace.
If someone has done you wrong, do not repay him with a wrong. Try to do what everyone considers to be good.Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody.Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God's anger do it. For the scripture says, “I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord.”
Help your relatives and they will protect you like a strong city wall, but if you quarrel with them, they will close their doors to you.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too.
Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.
But have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honor him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you,but do it with gentleness and respect. Keep your conscience clear, so that when you are insulted, those who speak evil of your good conduct as followers of Christ will become ashamed of what they say.
Forgive us the wrongs we have done, as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us.
Your speech should always be pleasant and interesting, and you should know how to give the right answer to everyone.
My friends, if someone is caught in any kind of wrongdoing, those of you who are spiritual should set him right; but you must do it in a gentle way. And keep an eye on yourselves, so that you will not be tempted, too.
When you forgive people for what they have done, I forgive them too. For when I forgive—if, indeed, I need to forgive anything—I do it in Christ's presence because of you,in order to keep Satan from getting the upper hand over us; for we know what his plans are.
Patient persuasion can break down the strongest resistance and can even convince rulers.
Do any of you think you are religious? If you do not control your tongue, your religion is worthless and you deceive yourself.
It is better to be patient than powerful. It is better to win control over yourself than over whole cities.
As the scripture says, “If you want to enjoy life and wish to see good times, you must keep from speaking evil and stop telling lies. You must turn away from evil and do good; you must strive for peace with all your heart.
How terrible for the world that there are things that make people lose their faith! Such things will always happen—but how terrible for the one who causes them!
Welcome those who are weak in faith, but do not argue with them about their personal opinions.
Be careful, however, not to let your freedom of action make those who are weak in the faith fall into sin.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that make people fall into sin are bound to happen, but how terrible for the one who makes them happen!
So then, if food makes a believer sin, I will never eat meat again, so as not to make a believer fall into sin.
“If anyone should cause one of these little ones to lose his faith in me, it would be better for that person to have a large millstone tied around his neck and be drowned in the deep sea.
If someone has a hot temper, let him take the consequences. If you get him out of trouble once, you will have to do it again.
“You can be sure that on the Judgment Day you will have to give account of every useless word you have ever spoken.Your words will be used to judge you—to declare you either innocent or guilty.”
The very fact that you have legal disputes among yourselves shows that you have failed completely. Would it not be better for you to be wronged? Would it not be better for you to be robbed?Instead, you yourselves wrong one another and rob one another, even other believers!
Parents, do not treat your children in such a way as to make them angry. Instead, raise them with Christian discipline and instruction.
“Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers.
Do not complain against one another, my friends, so that God will not judge you. The Judge is near, ready to appear.
If you stay calm, you are wise, but if you have a hot temper, you only show how stupid you are.
Tremble with fear and stop sinning; think deeply about this, when you lie in silence on your beds.
Be always humble, gentle, and patient. Show your love by being tolerant with one another. That was not what you learned about Christ! You certainly heard about him, and as his followers you were taught the truth that is in Jesus. So get rid of your old self, which made you live as you used to—the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires.Your hearts and minds must be made completely new,and you must put on the new self, which is created in God's likeness and reveals itself in the true life that is upright and holy. No more lying, then! Each of you must tell the truth to the other believer, because we are all members together in the body of Christ. If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day.Don't give the Devil a chance. If you used to rob, you must stop robbing and start working, in order to earn an honest living for yourself and to be able to help the poor.Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.Do your best to preserve the unity which the Spirit gives by means of the peace that binds you together.
The more you talk, the more likely you are to sin. If you are wise, you will keep quiet.
“We are allowed to do anything,” so they say. That is true, but not everything is good. “We are allowed to do anything”—but not everything is helpful.None of you should be looking out for your own interests, but for the interests of others.
You then, who eat only vegetables—why do you pass judgment on others? And you who eat anything—why do you despise other believers? All of us will stand before God to be judged by him.
When he was insulted, he did not answer back with an insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but placed his hopes in God, the righteous Judge.
Stupid people express their anger openly, but sensible people are patient and hold it back.
What you say can preserve life or destroy it; so you must accept the consequences of your words.
And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples.”
If we love others, we live in the light, and so there is nothing in us that will cause someone else to sin.
