61 Bible Verses about Forgiving Others

61 Bible Verses about Forgiving Others

Unforgiveness is like a poison we take in small doses every day, but it eventually ends up poisoning us. It's so easy to hold onto those hurts, isn't it? But think about it: the Lord calls us to repent of our sins and seek His forgiveness. He also urges us to forgive those who offend or hurt us. It's a two-way street.

As children of God, we're called to practice forgiveness constantly. Imagine bringing your offering to the altar and suddenly remembering someone you've wronged, or someone who has wronged you. What do you do? Leave the offering right there, go and reconcile, and then come back and worship. It makes you think, doesn't it?

It's hypocritical to say we love the Lord but can't stand the people we see every day. Think about that for a second. God wants us, as the body of Christ, to practice the same kind of love He has for us – the kind of love that led Him to sacrifice His Son. That's powerful stuff.

Holding a grudge can be toxic, you know? It can eat away at you. Bitterness toward someone in your church isn't a sign of maturity, it's a sign that something needs to change in our hearts. We need to repent of any hypocrisy, drop the pretense, and be the unified church Jesus is coming back for: a pure church, without spot or wrinkle. That's what the Lord wants, and it's what we should strive for, too.

Matthew 7:1-2

“Don't judge others, so that you won't be judged.Or if he asked for fish, would you give him a snake? So if even you who are evil know to give good things to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.Treat others the way you want them to treat you. This sums up the law and the prophets.Enter by the narrow entrance. For the entrance is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many travel that way.But the entrance is narrow, and the way is difficult that leads to life, and only a few find it.Watch out for false prophets who come wearing sheep's clothing, but who on the inside are vicious wolves. You can recognize them by their fruits. Do people harvest grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? So every good tree produces good fruit, while a bad tree produces bad fruit.A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit.Every tree that doesn't produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. For whatever standard you use to judge others will be used to judge you, and whatever measurement you use to measure others will be used to measure you.

God, please be gracious to me, because of your trustworthy love, because of your infinite kindness please wipe away my sins. Create a pure mind in me, God, and make me trustworthy again.Don't expel me from your presence; don't take away your Holy Spirit from me.Give me back the happiness of your salvation; help me to have a willing nature. Then I will teach your ways to rebellious people, and these sinners will come back to you.God, please forgive me for the blood I have shed, God of my salvation, and I will sing for joy of your goodness.Lord, open my lips so I can speak your praise! For sacrifices don't make you happy, or I would bring one; burnt offerings aren't what pleases you.The “sacrifices” that God wants are on the inside—the brokenness of repentance. God won't reject a broken and sorrowful heart.Be kind to Zion, help the city; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will be pleased with sacrifices given in the right spirit, for all kinds of burnt offerings, and bulls sacrificed on your altar once more.Wash away all my guilt; cleanse me from my sin.

Prayer

My God is so great, and worthy of all praise and adoration. Thank you, loving Father, for your faithfulness and love. Today, I come before you and ask for your healing touch on the hurts and pain in the hearts of my brothers and sisters in faith. Holy Spirit, root out any unforgiveness, strife, and division in their lives. Lord, as your church, may we live out your word: "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Father, as your children, may we practice forgiveness and reconciliation. Help us to show mercy to one another. May we clothe ourselves as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, and may unity and forgiveness be a banner in the heart of your church. Close every gap to the enemy so that they have nothing to accuse us of, and we stand as your holy and beloved people. In Jesus' name, Amen.
