Fasting helps me grow closer to God and strengthens my relationship with my Heavenly Father. I try not to see it as something I do for my own benefit, but as a way to improve my walk with God. It's a voluntary choice, a time when I set aside the physical need for food to nourish my spirit. It's a special time to seek God's presence, which is why I find it helpful to fast in a quiet place where I can talk with Him alone.
The Bible talks about this too. Daniel 9:31 says, "So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes." It's really inspiring to see how people in the Bible sought God through fasting.
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
Therefore also now, saith YY , turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto YY your Elohim: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our Elohim, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our Elohim is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.So we fasted and besought our Elohim for this: and he was intreated of us.

And said, I beseech thee, O YY Elohim of heaven, the great and terrible Elohim, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe His Commandments:Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Yisrael thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Yisrael, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept The Commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou Commandedst thy servant Moshe.Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou Commandedst thy servant Moshe, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:But if ye turn unto me, and keep My Commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.O YY , I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now Elohim had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my YY the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king. Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat. Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Yhoshafat to battle. Then there came some that told Yhoshafat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Ein-Gedi.And Yhoshafat feared, and set himself to seek YY , and proclaimed a fast throughout all Yhudah. And Yhudah gathered themselves together, to ask help of YY : even out of all the cities of Yhudah they came to seek YY .And Yhoshafat stood in the congregation of Yhudah and Yerushalayim, in the house of YY , before the new court,And said, O YY Elohim of our fathers, art not thou Elohim in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?Art not thou our Elohim, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Yisrael, and gavest it to the seed of Avraham thy friend for ever? And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Yisrael invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.O our Elohim, wilt thou not judge them? So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his Elohim. And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
