123 Verses of Comfort for the Time of Mourning

Comfort comes like a calming hug, a gentle breeze on your soul, and in the loving words of those around you. And, you know, in those really tough times, you can feel Jesus right there with you. There are people in your life who can offer comfort, holding you up when you feel like you're falling apart, reminding you of how precious you are. God's presence shines through them, like an extension of the Holy Spirit's comfort when you need it most.

It's so important to remember you're not alone in your struggles, even when the tears just won't stop. In those moments, God is reminding you that He loves you. His comfort is like the best medicine, strengthening you from the inside out, filling those deep-down empty spaces. Letting yourself be comforted is like accepting a little bit of heaven, so don't be afraid to open yourself up and let your vulnerability show.

Showing your brokenness isn't weakness. Those who mourn are blessed, finding comfort in the Almighty. So right now, let that comfort sink into your heart, lift your spirits. Even if things seem gray right now, the sun will shine again, and you'll see that even in the hard times, Jesus is right there with you. Even when you don't understand, remember that all things work together for good, according to His purpose for your life. Just like 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, God, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, is with us in our troubles, so that we can comfort others with the same comfort we've received. And just as everything is working for your good, you are being comforted so that you can offer comfort and show God's love to a world that really needs it.

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.

‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

This is my comfort in my misery, That Your word has revived me.

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever;the Helper is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.

having cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares about you.

Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord anointed me To bring good news to the humble; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to captives And freedom to prisoners; ¶I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a groom puts on a turban, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.For as the earth produces its sprouts, And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up, So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise To spring up before all the nations.To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The cloak of praise instead of a disheartened spirit. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

¶Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another, according to Christ Jesus,

“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever abandon you,”

But God, who comforts the discouraged, comforted us by the arrival of Titus;

strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all perseverance and patience; joyously

He gives strength to the weary, And to the one who lacks might He increases power.¶The voice of one calling out, “Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly,Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.

My soul waits in silence for God alone; From Him comes my salvation.Do not trust in oppression, And do not vainly rely on robbery; If wealth increases, do not set your heart on it.¶God has spoken once; Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God;And faithfulness is Yours, Lord, For You reward a person according to his work.He alone is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I will not be greatly shaken.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

“I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Why are you in despair, my soul? And why are you restless within me? Wait for God, for I will again praise Him For the help of His presence, my God.

“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, He will testify about Me,

Indeed, the Lord will comfort Zion; He will comfort all her ruins. And He will make her wilderness like Eden, And her desert like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, Thanksgiving and the sound of a melody.

“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or are we to look for someone else?”For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”

May Your favor comfort me, According to Your word to Your servant.

For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; And you will be comforted in Jerusalem.”

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as indeed the rest of mankind do, who have no hope.For if we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, so also God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.

“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.Behold, the Lord God will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His compensation is with Him, And His reward before Him.Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in the fold of His robe; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.¶Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And measured the heavens with a span, And calculated the dust of the earth with a measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales?Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or as His counselor has informed Him?With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge, And informed Him of the way of understanding?Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust. Even Lebanon is not enough to burn, Nor its animals enough for a burnt offering.All the nations are as nothing before Him, They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless. ¶To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him?As for the idol, a craftsman casts it, A goldsmith plates it with gold, And a silversmith fashions chains of silver.“Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has ended, That her guilt has been removed, That she has received of the Lord’s hand Double for all her sins.”

who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

I will raise my eyes to the mountains; From where will my help come?My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

But the one who prophesies speaks to people for edification, exhortation, and consolation.

For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.

May You increase my greatness And turn to comfort me.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,

¶You have taken account of my miseries; Put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?

Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.

Then you will say on that day, “I will give thanks to You, Lord; For although You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, And You comfort me.

My soul weeps because of grief; Strengthen me according to Your word.

Therefore, comfort one another with these words.

“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in You.

¶Disgrace has broken my heart, and I am so sick. And I waited for sympathy, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.

When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comfort delights my soul.

I waited patiently for the Lord; And He reached down to me and heard my cry.I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great congregation.¶You, Lord, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your mercy and Your truth will continually watch over me. For evils beyond number have surrounded me; My guilty deeds have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my heart has failed me. ¶Be pleased, Lord, to rescue me; Hurry, Lord, to help me.May those be ashamed and humiliated together Who seek my life to destroy it; May those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in my hurt. May those be appalled because of their shame Who say to me, “Aha, aha!”May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; May those who love Your salvation continually say, “The Lord be exalted!”But I am afflicted and needy; May the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my savior; Do not delay, my God.He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the mud; And He set my feet on a rock, making my footsteps firm.He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord.

Trouble and anguish have come upon me, Yet Your commandments are my delight.

Behold, I am telling you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

Let’s hold firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;

The troubles of my heart are enlarged; Bring me out of my distresses.

¶I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, And I wait for His word. My soul waits in hope for the Lord More than the watchmen for the morning; Yes, more than the watchmen for the morning.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

For this is what the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, says: “I dwell in a high and holy place, And also with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the contrite.

God is our refuge and strength, A very ready help in trouble. “Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth.” The Lord of armies is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. SelahTherefore we will not fear, though the earth shakes And the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;

teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.

Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

Those who love Your Law have great peace, And nothing causes them to stumble.

These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

See how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know Him.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my savior, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

¶Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will reach out with Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

¶Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, The God who is our salvation. Selah

I rise before dawn and cry for help; I wait for Your words. My eyes anticipate the night watches, So that I may meditate on Your word.

For we know that if our earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.

The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in From this time and forever.

You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have untied my sackcloth and encircled me with joy,That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin.Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.

If I should say, “My foot has slipped,” Your faithfulness, Lord, will support me.When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comfort delights my soul.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,

Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus.

¶Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.

rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,

¶He will not fear bad news; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

“As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the Lord is refined; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.

¶Teach me to do Your will, For You are my God; Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

¶My soul, wait in silence for God alone, For my hope is from Him.

The Lord favors those who fear Him, Those who wait for His faithfulness.

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our inner person is being renewed day by day.For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

The Lord is my shepherd, I will not be in need.

The arrogant utterly deride me, Yet I do not turn aside from Your Law.

I long for Your salvation, Lord, And Your Law is my delight.

No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

¶Now as for me, I said in my prosperity, “I will never be moved.”

nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

My eyes fail with longing for Your word, While I say, “When will You comfort me?”

Lord my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me.

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Bless the Lord, my soul, And do not forget any of His benefits;Bless the Lord, you His angels, Mighty in strength, who perform His word, Obeying the voice of His word!Bless the Lord, all you His angels, You who serve Him, doing His will.Bless the Lord, all you works of His, In all places of His dominion; Bless the Lord, my soul!Who pardons all your guilt, Who heals all your diseases;Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with favor and compassion;

In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; In the night my hand was stretched out and did not grow weary; My soul refused to be comforted.

If Your Law had not been my delight, Then I would have perished in my misery.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

God is to us a God of salvation; And to God the Lord belong ways of escape from death.

Lord, You have searched me and known me.Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will take hold of me.If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,”Even darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.¶For You created my innermost parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.My frame was not hidden from You When I was made in secret, And skillfully formed in the depths of the earth;Your eyes have seen my formless substance; And in Your book were written All the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.¶How precious also are Your thoughts for me, God! The wicked is thrust down by his own wrongdoing, But the righteous has a refuge when he dies.

“What gain is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble; He saved them from their distresses.He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart.

¶But as for me, I trust in You, Lord, I say, “You are my God.”

I love the Lord, because He hears My voice and my pleas.I believed when I said, “I am greatly afflicted.”I said in my alarm, “All people are liars.”¶What shall I repay to the Lord For all His benefits to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the Lord.I will pay my vows to the Lord; May it be in the presence of all His people!Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones.O Lord, I surely am Your slave, I am Your slave, the son of Your female slave, You have unfastened my restraints.I will offer You a sacrifice of thanksgiving, And call upon the name of the Lord.I will pay my vows to the Lord, May it be in the presence of all His people,In the courtyards of the Lord’s house, In the midst of you, Jerusalem! Rejoice always,pray without ceasing,in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

For my father and my mother have forsaken me, But the Lord will take me up.

For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.

¶“I, I Myself, am He who comforts you. Who are you that you are afraid of mortal man, And of a son of man who is made like grass,

For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”
