123 Verses of Comfort for the Time of Mourning

123 Verses of Comfort for the Time of Mourning

Comfort comes like a calming hug, a gentle breeze on your soul, and in the loving words of those around you. And, you know, in those really tough times, you can feel Jesus right there with you. There are people in your life who can offer comfort, holding you up when you feel like you're falling apart, reminding you of how precious you are. God's presence shines through them, like an extension of the Holy Spirit's comfort when you need it most.

It's so important to remember you're not alone in your struggles, even when the tears just won't stop. In those moments, God is reminding you that He loves you. His comfort is like the best medicine, strengthening you from the inside out, filling those deep-down empty spaces. Letting yourself be comforted is like accepting a little bit of heaven, so don't be afraid to open yourself up and let your vulnerability show.

Showing your brokenness isn't weakness. Those who mourn are blessed, finding comfort in the Almighty. So right now, let that comfort sink into your heart, lift your spirits. Even if things seem gray right now, the sun will shine again, and you'll see that even in the hard times, Jesus is right there with you. Even when you don't understand, remember that all things work together for good, according to His purpose for your life. Just like 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, God, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, is with us in our troubles, so that we can comfort others with the same comfort we've received. And just as everything is working for your good, you are being comforted so that you can offer comfort and show God's love to a world that really needs it.

John 14:1-3

“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works.Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever;the Helper is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.“I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. After a little while, the world no longer is going to see Me, but you are going to see Me; because I live, you also will live.In My Father’s house are many rooms; if that were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you.On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you.The one who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will reveal Myself to him.”Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what has happened that You are going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?”Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will follow My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our dwelling with him.The one who does not love Me does not follow My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.“These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you.But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful. You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.And now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you also will be.

Isaiah 40:1-2

“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.Behold, the Lord God will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His compensation is with Him, And His reward before Him.Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in the fold of His robe; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.¶Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And measured the heavens with a span, And calculated the dust of the earth with a measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales?Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or as His counselor has informed Him?With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge, And informed Him of the way of understanding?Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust. Even Lebanon is not enough to burn, Nor its animals enough for a burnt offering. All the nations are as nothing before Him, They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless. ¶To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him?As for the idol, a craftsman casts it, A goldsmith plates it with gold, And a silversmith fashions chains of silver.“Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has ended, That her guilt has been removed, That she has received of the Lord’s hand Double for all her sins.”

For evils beyond number have surrounded me; My guilty deeds have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my heart has failed me. ¶Be pleased, Lord, to rescue me; Hurry, Lord, to help me.May those be ashamed and humiliated together Who seek my life to destroy it; May those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in my hurt. May those be appalled because of their shame Who say to me, “Aha, aha!”May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; May those who love Your salvation continually say, “The Lord be exalted!”But I am afflicted and needy; May the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my savior; Do not delay, my God.He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the mud; And He set my feet on a rock, making my footsteps firm.He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord.

Lord, You have searched me and known me.Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will take hold of me.If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,”Even darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.¶For You created my innermost parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.My frame was not hidden from You When I was made in secret, And skillfully formed in the depths of the earth;Your eyes have seen my formless substance; And in Your book were written All the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.¶How precious also are Your thoughts for me, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.¶If only You would put the wicked to death, God; Leave me, you men of bloodshed. You know when I sit down and when I get up; You understand my thought from far away.

I will lift up the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the Lord.I will pay my vows to the Lord; May it be in the presence of all His people!Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones.O Lord, I surely am Your slave, I am Your slave, the son of Your female slave, You have unfastened my restraints.I will offer You a sacrifice of thanksgiving, And call upon the name of the Lord.I will pay my vows to the Lord, May it be in the presence of all His people,In the courtyards of the Lord’s house, In the midst of you, Jerusalem! Praise the Lord!Because He has inclined His ear to me, Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

Prayer

In you, beloved God, I find my peace. In you, oh Lord, I find freedom and healing for my soul. You are my good, my sustenance, my strength. Where else could I go, Lord, but to you? So in Jesus' name, I pray to you and call upon your name to find grace and timely help. Your word says, Lord, "He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand." Today, my God and King, I ask you to establish your peace and order in my mind and heart. Holy Spirit, I long for you to pour your comfort over me, for I feel faint because of this situation I'm going through. When fear comes, and the strong winds of doubt try to capsize my boat, I know, Jesus, that like Peter, you will come to rescue me. My heart truly feels weak, and the pain makes me succumb to despair, but regardless of how I feel right now, Lord, I ask you to deliver me from depression, suicidal thoughts, and frustration. Protect me, Lord, for you alone are my help. You created me with your own hands, you know my thoughts, and you search my heart. In the face of this situation/illness/loss, I declare that you, Jehovah, are my strength, you are the rock of my salvation, you are the living God who keeps his promises. Please, help me to trust. I ask now that you place your power and the anointing of your Holy Spirit upon me, so that I can help those who are captive to pain. I present my life before you – all that I have been, all that I am, and all that I will be. I place my affliction and sorrow in your hands. Close, Lord, every door that I have opened to the enemy, and with your yoke-destroying anointing, deliver me from evil. In Jesus' name, Amen.
