117 Bible Verses about Rest

117 Bible Verses about Rest

After a long day, nothing's better for you than some good rest. Your body's always sending you signals when something's not right, so it's important to pay attention. Rest is crucial for both your physical and mental health.

These days, so many of us are dealing with mental exhaustion more than physical, thanks to the everyday demands of life. It can really steal your peace and make it hard to trust in God. Lack of rest can make you irritable, lose focus on what truly matters, and slip into a complaining mindset, forgetting to be grateful.

Being exhausted affects everything – your productivity, your ability to enjoy the things you normally do. And quick fixes aren't going to cut it. The only real source of rest and renewal is Jesus Christ. Trips, shopping sprees, hanging out with friends – those things can be nice distractions, but only the presence of the Holy Spirit can bring true relief.

The good news is, God offers rest to those who are weary, burdened, and overwhelmed. The peace that comes from Him is unlike anything this world offers, and it lasts forever.

Matthew 11:28 invites all those who labor and are heavy laden to find rest in Jesus. There's no other sure way to find deep, lasting rest. If you've tried everything and still feel weighed down, it's time to turn to the best source there is: God. He's the ultimate therapist, the place where you'll find the strength to keep going and enjoy life again.

Let God's love bring you serenity. Take a deep breath and release all that exhaustion in Jesus' name. Just like the Psalmist David, you can say, "Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you" (Psalm 116:7).

Genesis 2:2-3

And on the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. And the man gave names to all the cattle and to the birds of the sky and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. So Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. And Yahweh God fashioned the rib, which He had taken from the man, into a woman, and He brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This one finally is bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called Woman, Because this one was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created in making it.

Therefore I exhort you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice—living, holy, and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. being devoted to one another in brotherly love, giving preference to one another in honor, not lagging behind in diligence, being fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, persevering in affliction, being devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, pursuing hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless, and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep, by being of the same mind toward one another, not being haughty in mind, but associating with the humble. Do not be wise in your own mind. Never paying back evil for evil to anyone, respecting what is good in the sight of all men, if possible, so far as it depends on you, being at peace with all men, never taking your own revenge, beloved—instead leave room for the wrath of God. For it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may approve what the will of God is, that which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Psalm 119:1-2

How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of Yahweh. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me stray from Your commandments. I perceive more than the aged, Because I have observed Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. I have not turned aside from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. How sweet is Your word to my taste! Sweeter than honey to my mouth! From Your precepts I get perception; Therefore I hate every false way. ¶Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. I have sworn and I have confirmed, To keep Your righteous judgments. I am exceedingly afflicted; O Yahweh, revive me according to Your word. Oh be pleased with the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Yahweh, And teach me Your judgments. My soul is continually in my hand, Yet I do not forget Your law. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. The wicked have laid a snare for me, Yet I have not wandered from Your precepts. I have inherited Your testimonies forever, For they are the joy of my heart. I have inclined my heart to do Your statutes Forever, to the end. ¶I hate those who are double-minded, But I love Your law. You are my hiding place and my shield; I wait for Your word. Depart from me, evildoers, That I may observe the commandments of my God. Sustain me according to Your word, that I may live; And do not put me to shame because of my hope. Uphold me that I may be saved, That I may have regard for Your statutes continually. You have rejected all those who stray from Your statutes, For their deceitfulness is a lie. You remove all the wicked of the earth like dross; Therefore I love Your testimonies. Blessed are You, O Yahweh; Teach me Your statutes. My flesh quakes for dread of You, And I am afraid of Your judgments. ¶I have done justice and righteousness; Do not leave me to my oppressors. Be for Your slave a guarantee for good; Do not let the arrogant oppress me. My eyes fail with longing for Your salvation And for Your righteous word. Deal with Your slave according to Your lovingkindness And teach me Your statutes. I am Your slave; give me understanding, That I may know Your testimonies. It is time for Yahweh to act, For they have broken Your law. Therefore I love Your commandments Above gold, even above fine gold. Therefore I deem all Your precepts concerning everything to be right, I hate every false way. ¶Your testimonies are wonderful; Therefore my soul observes them. With my lips I have recounted All the judgments of Your mouth. The unfolding of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. I opened my mouth wide and panted, For I longed for Your commandments. Turn to me and be gracious to me, According to Your judgment for those who love Your name. Establish my steps in Your word, And do not let any wickedness overpower me. Redeem me from the oppression of man, That I may keep Your precepts. Make Your face shine upon Your slave, And teach me Your statutes. My eyes shed streams of water, Because they do not keep Your law. ¶Righteous are You, O Yahweh, And upright are Your judgments. In righteousness, You have commanded Your testimonies And in exceeding faithfulness. My zeal has consumed me, Because my adversaries have forgotten Your words. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches. Your word is exceedingly refined, Therefore Your slave loves it. I am small and despised, Yet I do not forget Your precepts. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth. Trouble and anguish have found me, Yet Your commandments are my delight. Righteous are Your testimonies forever; Give me understanding that I may live. ¶I called with all my heart; answer me, O Yahweh! I will observe Your statutes. I called to You; save me And I shall keep Your testimonies. I eagerly greet the dawn and cry for help; I wait for Your words. My eyes eagerly greet the night watches, That I may muse on Your word. Hear my voice according to Your lovingkindness; O Yahweh, revive me, according to Your judgments. I will muse upon Your precepts And look upon Your ways. Near are those who pursue wickedness; They are far from Your law. Near are You, O Yahweh, And all Your commandments are truth. Of old I have known from Your testimonies That You have founded them forever. ¶See my affliction and rescue me, For I do not forget Your law. Plead my cause and redeem me; Revive me according to Your word. Salvation is far from the wicked, For they do not seek Your statutes. Many are Your compassions, O Yahweh; Revive me according to Your judgments. Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, Yet I do not turn aside from Your testimonies. I see the treacherous and loathe them, Those who do not keep Your word. See how I love Your precepts; O Yahweh, revive me according to Your lovingkindness. I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word. The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments is everlasting. ¶Princes persecute me without cause, But my heart is in dread of Your words. I rejoice at Your word, As one who finds much spoil. I hate and abhor lying, But I love Your law. Seven times a day I praise You, Because of Your righteous judgments. Those who love Your law have much peace, And nothing causes them to stumble. I hope for Your salvation, O Yahweh, And I do Your commandments. My soul keeps Your testimonies, And I love them exceedingly. I keep Your precepts and Your testimonies, For all my ways are before You. ¶Let my cry of lamentation come near before You, O Yahweh; Give me understanding according to Your word. ¶Deal bountifully with Your slave, That I may live and keep Your word. Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word. Let my lips pour forth praise, For You teach me Your statutes. Let my tongue answer with Your word, For all Your commandments are righteous. Let Your hand be ready to help me, For I have chosen Your precepts. I long for Your salvation, O Yahweh, And Your law is my delight. Let my soul live that it may praise You, And let Your judgments help me. I have wandered off like a lost sheep; search for Your slave, For I have not forgotten Your commandments. Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law. I am a sojourner in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me. How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, They seek Him with all their heart.

1 Peter 1:6-7

In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:1-2

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die, but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the practices of the body, you will live. For as many as are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry out, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, also heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

Isaiah 40:1-2

“Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God. Behold, Lord Yahweh will come with strength, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him And His recompense before Him. Like a shepherd He will shepherd His flock; In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes. ¶Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And encompassed the heavens by the span, And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales? Who has encompassed the Spirit of Yahweh, Or as His counselor has informed Him? With whom did He take counsel and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge And made Him know the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, And are counted as a speck of dust on the scales; Behold, He lifts up the coastlands like fine dust. Even Lebanon is not enough to burn, Nor its beasts enough for a burnt offering. All the nations are as nothing before Him; They are counted by Him as non-existent and utterly formless. ¶To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him? As for the graven images, a craftsman casts it, A goldsmith plates it with gold, And a silversmith fashions chains of silver. “Speak to the heart of Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has been fulfilled, That her iniquity has been removed, That she has received from the hand of Yahweh Double for all her sins.”

Psalm 40:1-3

I hoped earnestly for Yahweh; And He inclined to me and heard my cry for help. I do not conceal Your righteousness within my heart; I speak of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I do not hide Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly. ¶You, O Yahweh, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually guard me. For evils beyond number have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my heart has failed me. ¶Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me; Make haste, O Yahweh, to help me. Let those be ashamed and humiliated together Who seek my life to sweep it away; Let those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in evil against me. Let those be appalled because of their shame Who say to me, “Aha, aha!” Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let those who love Your salvation say continually, “Yahweh be magnified!” As for me, I am afflicted and needy, May the Lord think of me. You are my help and the One who rescues me; Do not delay, O my God. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a high rock, He established my steps. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in Yahweh.

Prayer

I adore you, my God. You are my refuge, my portion, my savior, the one who lifts my head. In the name of Jesus, I pray to you, my Father, because I feel anxiety and despair draining my strength. I come to you because you are my shelter, and I lay all my worries at your feet. Help me, Holy Spirit, and give me the humility and determination to read your word when I feel weary, and through your promise, find rest for my soul. Your word says, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Help me to walk in your peace. I want to be filled with your tranquility. Renew me, transform my heart and mind so that I stop agonizing over unnecessary things. Remind me, Lord, of the times you've been faithful in the past so I can look forward with confidence, knowing you uphold me with the right hand of your righteousness. I declare that I trust you in every area of my life, because it is written, "Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows." You are my defender against adversity, my shield against the enemy, you are my glory, my God, the one who lifts my head. Let me find in your presence the strength I need to move forward. Lord, my mind, body, and spirit feel tired and worn out. Things in my life feel impossible. Help me understand that it's not by my strength but by yours that I must wait in faith while you work. By your grace, keep me from depression, anger, and resentment. Protect me in the storms of life and give me wisdom to make good decisions and please you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
