Longevity is all about survival, persistence, endurance, lasting a long time, and simply being vital and alive. Think about it, from the very beginning, God didn't want us to die; He wanted us to live forever here on Earth.

When you read those first chapters of Genesis, it's clear that disobedience and sin are what brought death into the world. But there's also this promise of a long life woven throughout the Bible.

Look at the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:12¹²: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." Right there, God connects honoring your parents with living a longer life. Pretty powerful stuff.

Wise King Solomon, in Ecclesiastes, also gives us some food for thought about living a long time. He basically says, don't do a lot of bad stuff, don't be foolish, why die before your time? The further you are from evil, the longer you'll live.

And I think there's also this unspoken idea that if you take care of your body – the temple of God – He'll take care of you. We see in the Bible that Jesus welcomed some believers directly into heaven, which makes me wonder if maybe a lack of care for their health led them there sooner than they might have otherwise gone.

It all comes down to this: we need to follow the instructions God gives us in His guidebook for life. Honor your parents, take care of your body, stay away from foolishness and evil, and ask God for wisdom and understanding. If you do these things, you won't die before your time. It’s that simple.

Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the LORD’s house forever.

The LORD knows the days of the perfect. Their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be disappointed in the time of evil. In the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.

I will satisfy him with long life, and show him my salvation.”

Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways. For you will eat the labour of your hands. You will be happy, and it will be well with you.

for they will add to you length of days, years of life, and peace.

For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.

“No more will there be an infant who only lives a few days, nor an old man who has not filled his days; for the child will die one hundred years old, and the sinner being one hundred years old will be accursed.

“Which of you by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?

I will never forget your precepts, for with them, you have revived me.

“The LORD kills and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up.

You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.

My son, don’t forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine. My son, don’t despise the LORD’s discipline, neither be weary of his correction; for whom the LORD loves, he corrects, even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights. Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding. For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies. None of the things you can desire are to be compared to her. Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. Happy is everyone who retains her. By wisdom the LORD founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens. for they will add to you length of days, years of life, and peace.

These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years. Abraham gave up his spirit, and died at a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people.

“Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honour him.

The fear of the LORD prolongs days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

You will come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in its season.

Yes, even when I am old and grey-haired, God, don’t forsake me, until I have declared your strength to the next generation, your might to everyone who is to come.

But you, God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

For, “He who would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

The life of the body is a heart at peace, but envy rots the bones.

“Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name.

Don’t put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish.

Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It will be health to your body, and nourishment to your bones.

that your days and your children’s days may be multiplied in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.

They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green,

The path of life leads upward for the wise, to keep him from going downward to Sheol.

The LORD said, “My Spirit will not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; so his days will be one hundred and twenty years.”

Those who love your law have great peace. Nothing causes them to stumble.

He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance. So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

Even to old age I am he, and even to grey hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

For whoever finds me finds life, and will obtain favour from the LORD. But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul. All those who hate me love death.”

Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?

Grey hair is a crown of glory. It is attained by a life of righteousness.

Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience, and because of their iniquities. Their soul abhors all kinds of food. They draw near to the gates of death.

As for man, his days are like grass. As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more.

Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

and the LORD will guide you continually, satisfy your soul in dry places, and make your bones strong. You will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters don’t fail.

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honour prefer one another, not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, enduring in troubles, continuing steadfastly in prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, and given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless, and don’t curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind one towards another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits. Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honourable in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.” Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. As with a sword in my bones, my adversaries reproach me, while they continually ask me, “Where is your God?” Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

I have rejoiced in the way of your testimonies, as much as in all riches.

By faith Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.

For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now and of that which is to come.

Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments. The wicked will see it, and be grieved. He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away. The desire of the wicked will perish. His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house. His righteousness endures forever.

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honourable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

In the way of righteousness is life; in its path there is no death.

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD, his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps truth forever;

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your descendants, and return to the LORD your God and obey his voice according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul, to love the LORD your God, to obey his voice, and to cling to him; for he is your life, and the length of your days, that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season if we don’t give up.

Precious in the LORD’s sight is the death of his saints.

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Strength and dignity are her clothing. She laughs at the time to come.

Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burdens, even the God who is our salvation. Selah.

Cast your burden on the LORD and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, to four generations. So Job died, being old and full of days.

May the LORD increase you more and more, you and your children. Blessed are you by the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him. For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.

Behold, this is how the man who fears the LORD is blessed.

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw near, when you will say, “I have no pleasure in them;”

Abraham was old, and well advanced in age. The LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.

Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails.

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. The voice of one who calls out, “Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness! Make a level highway in the desert for our God. Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Hold me up, and I will be safe, and will have respect for your statutes continually.

Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honour.

to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

He died at a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour; and Solomon his son reigned in his place.

Your loving kindness, LORD, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

He who follows after righteousness and kindness finds life, righteousness, and honour.

They will not build and another inhabit. They will not plant and another eat; for the days of my people will be like the days of a tree, and my chosen will long enjoy the work of their hands.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: I have seen the burden which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end. Moreover I saw under the sun, in the place of justice, that wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, that wickedness was there. I said in my heart, “God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.” I said in my heart, “As for the sons of men, God tests them, so that they may see that they themselves are like animals. For that which happens to the sons of men happens to animals. Even one thing happens to them. As the one dies, so the other dies. Yes, they have all one breath; and man has no advantage over the animals, for all is vanity. a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

For the LORD is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations.

The LORD’s blessing brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

What man is he who fears the LORD? He shall instruct him in the way that he shall choose.

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The hands of the diligent ones shall rule, but laziness ends in slave labour.

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Praise the LORD, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name! He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us for our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his loving kindness towards those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass. But the LORD’s loving kindness is from everlasting to everlasting with those who fear him, his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant, to those who remember to obey his precepts. The LORD has established his throne in the heavens. His kingdom rules over all. Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, Praise the LORD, you angels of his, who are mighty in strength, who fulfil his word, obeying the voice of his word. Praise the LORD, all you armies of his, you servants of his, who do his pleasure. Praise the LORD, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion. Praise the LORD, my soul! who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

Also delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed towards us.

Let my soul live, that I may praise you. Let your ordinances help me.

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the LORD’s law. With my whole heart I have sought you. Don’t let me wander from your commandments. I understand more than the aged, because I have kept your precepts. I have kept my feet from every evil way, that I might observe your word. I have not turned away from your ordinances, for you have taught me. How sweet are your promises to my taste, more than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts, I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. NUN Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Salvation is far from the wicked, for they don’t seek your statutes. Great are your tender mercies, LORD. Revive me according to your ordinances. Many are my persecutors and my adversaries. I haven’t swerved from your testimonies. I look at the faithless with loathing, because they don’t observe your word. Consider how I love your precepts. Revive me, LORD, according to your loving kindness. I will delight myself in your statutes. I will not forget your word. GIMEL All of your words are truth. Every one of your righteous ordinances endures forever. SIN AND SHIN Princes have persecuted me without a cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words. I rejoice at your word, as one who finds great plunder. I hate and abhor falsehood. I love your law. Seven times a day, I praise you, because of your righteous ordinances. Those who love your law have great peace. Nothing causes them to stumble. I have hoped for your salvation, LORD. I have done your commandments. My soul has observed your testimonies. Your law is my delight. Let my soul live, that I may praise you. Let your ordinances help me. I have gone astray like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I don’t forget your commandments. Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things out of your law. I am a stranger on the earth. Don’t hide your commandments from me. Blessed are those who keep his statutes, who seek him with their whole heart.

A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth.

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him. He will show them his covenant.

For the LORD God is a sun and a shield. The LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.

“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies. Depart from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it.

Listen, my son, and receive my sayings. The years of your life will be many.

The result of humility and the fear of the LORD is wealth, honour, and life.

He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honour him. I will satisfy him with long life, and show him my salvation.”

“Honour your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. But that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know our state and that he may comfort your hearts. Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love. Amen. “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”
