Longevity is all about survival, persistence, endurance, lasting a long time, and simply being vital and alive. Think about it, from the very beginning, God didn't want us to die; He wanted us to live forever here on Earth.

When you read those first chapters of Genesis, it's clear that disobedience and sin are what brought death into the world. But there's also this promise of a long life woven throughout the Bible.

Look at the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:12¹²: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." Right there, God connects honoring your parents with living a longer life. Pretty powerful stuff.

Wise King Solomon, in Ecclesiastes, also gives us some food for thought about living a long time. He basically says, don't do a lot of bad stuff, don't be foolish, why die before your time? The further you are from evil, the longer you'll live.

And I think there's also this unspoken idea that if you take care of your body – the temple of God – He'll take care of you. We see in the Bible that Jesus welcomed some believers directly into heaven, which makes me wonder if maybe a lack of care for their health led them there sooner than they might have otherwise gone.

It all comes down to this: we need to follow the instructions God gives us in His guidebook for life. Honor your parents, take care of your body, stay away from foolishness and evil, and ask God for wisdom and understanding. If you do these things, you won't die before your time. It’s that simple.

Only goodness and loving-commitment follow me All the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the House of יהוה, To the length of days!

Yod יהוה knows the days of the perfect, And their inheritance is forever.They are not ashamed in a time of evil, And in the days of scarcity of food they are satisfied.

“Walk in all the ways which יהוה your Elohim has commanded you, so that you live and it be well with you. And you shall prolong your days in the land which you possess.

With long life I satisfy him, And show him My deliverance.

Blessed are all who fear יהוה, Who walk in His ways.You shall eat the labour of your hands. Be blessed, and let it be well with you.

For length of days and long life And peace they add to you.

For by me your days become many, And years of life are added to you.

“No more is an infant from there going to live but a few days, nor an old man who does not complete his days, for the youth dies one hundred years old, but the sinner being one hundred years old shall be lightly esteemed.

“And which of you by worrying is able to add one cubit to his life’s span?

Let me never forget Your orders, For by them You have given me life.

“יהוה puts to death and makes alive, He brings down to She’ol and raises up.

You show me the path of life; In Your presence is joy to satisfaction; At Your right hand are pleasures forever.

Your eyes saw my unformed body. And in Your book all of them were written, The days they were formed, While none was among them.

My son, do not forget my Torah, And let your heart watch over my commands;Then your storehouses shall be filled with plenty, And your vats overflow with new wine.My son, do not despise the discipline of יהוה, And do not loathe His reproof;For whom יהוה loves He reproves, As a father the son whom he delights in.Blessed is the man who has found wisdom, And the man who gets understanding;For the gain from it is better Than gain from silver, And its increase than fine gold.She is more precious than rubies, And all your delights are not comparable to her.Length of days is in her right hand, Riches and esteem in her left hand.Her ways are pleasant ways, And all her paths are peace.She is a tree of life to those taking hold of her, And blessed are all who retain her.יהוה founded the earth by wisdom; He established the heavens by understanding;For length of days and long life And peace they add to you.

And these are all the years of Aḇraham’s life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years.And Aḇraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, aged and satisfied, and was gathered to his people.

“Because he cleaves to Me in love, Therefore I deliver him; I set him on high, Because he has known My Name.When he calls on Me, I answer him; I am with him in distress; I deliver him and esteem him.”

The fear of יהוה prolongs days, But the years of the wrong ones are shortened.

You shall come to the burial-site in ripe old age, like the stacking of grain in its season.

And also when I am old and grey, O Elohim, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to a generation, Your might to all those who are to come.

For You, O Elohim, do bring them down To the pit of destruction; Men of blood and deceit do not reach half their days; But I, I trust in You.

For “He who wishes to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit,

A healthy heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones.

“Because he cleaves to Me in love, Therefore I deliver him; I set him on high, Because he has known My Name.

Do not put your trust in princes, In a son of man, in whom is no deliverance.His spirit goes out, he returns to his earth; In that day his plans perish.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear יהוה and turn away from evil.It is healing to your navel, And moistening to your bones.

so that your days and the days of your children are increased on the soil of which יהוה swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens on the earth.

They still bear fruit in old age; They are fresh and green,

The path of life is upward for the wise, To turn away from She’ol below.

And יהוה said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever in his going astray. He is flesh, and his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Great peace have those loving Your Torah, And for them there is no stumbling-block.

And He chose Dawiḏ His servant, And took him from the sheepfolds;He brought him in from tending the ewes, To shepherd Ya‛aqoḇ His people, And Yisra’ĕl His inheritance.And he shepherded them According to the integrity of his heart, And led them by the skill of his hands.

even to your old age, I am He, and even to grey hairs I carry! I have made and I bear, and I carry and rescue.

“For whoever finds me shall find life, And obtain favour from יהוה,“But he who sins against me injures himself; All who hate me love death!”

Do not be wrong overmuch, and do not be a fool – why die before your time?

Grey hair is a crown of adorning, It is found in the way of righteousness.

Fools, because of their transgression, And because of their crookednesses, were afflicted.Their being loathed all food, And they drew near to the gates of death,

A man’s days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.For the wind blows over it, and it is no more, And its place no longer remembers it.

“The beginning of wisdom is: Get wisdom! And with all your getting, get understanding.

“Then יהוה would guide you continually, and satisfy your being in drought, and strengthen your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

I call upon you, therefore, brothers, through the compassion of Elohim, to present your bodies a living offering – set-apart, well-pleasing to Elohim – your reasonable worship.In brotherly love, tenderly loving towards one another, in appreciation, giving preference to each other;not idle in duty, ardent in spirit, serving the Master;rejoicing in the expectancy, enduring under pressure, continuing steadfastly in prayer;imparting to the needs of the set-apart ones, pursuing kindness towards strangers.Bless those who persecute you – bless and do not curse.Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not be proud in mind, but go along with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.Repay no one evil for evil. As a deer longs for the water streams, So my being longs for You, O Elohim.With murder in my bones, My enemies have reproached me, While they say to me all day long, “Where is your Elohim?”Why are you depressed, O my being? And why are you restless within me? Wait for Elohim: for I shall yet thank Him, the deliverance of my face, And my Elohim.My being thirsts for Elohim, for the living Ěl. When shall I enter in to appear before Elohim?

I have rejoiced in the way of Your witnesses, As over all riches.

By belief, Ḥanoḵ was translated so as not to see death, “and was not found because Elohim had translated him.” For before his translation he obtained witness, that he pleased Elohim.

For bodily exercise is profitable for a little, but reverence is profitable for all, having promise of the present life, and of that which is to come.

Aleph Praise Yah! Blessed is the man, Who fears יהוה, Bĕt Who has greatly delighted in His commands.Rĕsh The wrong one sees it and shall be vexed; Shin He gnashes his teeth and shall melt. Taw The desire of the wrong ones does perish.Gimel Mighty in the earth shall be his seed, Dalet The generation of the straight ones shall be blessed.Hĕ Wealth and riches are in his house, Waw And his righteousness is standing forever.

For the rest, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is righteous, whatever is clean, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good report, if there is any uprightness and if there is any praise – think on these.

In the way of righteousness is life, And in its pathway there is no death.

Blessed is he who has the Ěl of Ya‛aqoḇ for his help, Whose expectancy is in יהוה his Elohim,Maker of the heavens and earth, The sea and all that is in them, Who is guarding truth forever,

“I have called the heavens and the earth as witnesses today against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore you shall choose life, so that you live, both you and your seed,and shall turn back to יהוה your Elohim and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your being, you and your children,“to love יהוה your Elohim, to obey His voice, and to cling to Him – for He is your life and the length of your days – to dwell in the land which יהוה swore to your fathers, to Aḇraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Ya‛aqoḇ, to give them.

And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not grow weary.

Precious in the eyes of יהוה Is the death of His lovingly-committed ones.

Teach us to number our days, And let us bring the heart to wisdom.

Strength and splendour are her garments, And she rejoices in time to come.

Blessed be יהוה, Day by day He bears our burden, The Ěl of our deliverance! Selah.

Cast your burden on יהוה, And let Him sustain you; He never allows the righteous to be shaken.

And after this Iyoḇ lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations.And Iyoḇ died, old and satisfied with days.

יהוה gives you increase more and more, You and your children.You are blessed by יהוה, Who made the heavens and earth.

Because there is no distinction between Yehuḏi and Greek, for the same Master of all is rich to all those calling upon Him.For “everyone who calls on the Name of יהוה shall be saved.”

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those loving it eat its fruit.

Look, so shall the man be blessed Who fears יהוה.

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw near when you say, “I have no pleasure in them”:

And Aḇraham was old, advanced in years. And יהוה had blessed Aḇraham in every way.

Do not cast me off in the time of old age, When my strength fails, do not forsake me.

He gives power to the faint, and to those who have no might He increases strength.The voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of יהוה; make straight in the desert a highway for our Elohim.Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men stumble and fall,but those who wait on יהוה renew their strength, they raise up the wing like eagles, they run and are not weary, they walk and do not faint.

Sustain me, that I might be saved, And always look to Your laws.

Length of days is in her right hand, Riches and esteem in her left hand.

to appoint unto those who mourn in Tsiyon: to give them embellishment for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. And they shall be called trees of righteousness, a planting of יהוה, to be adorned.

יהוה is my shepherd; I do not lack.He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.He turns back my being; He leads me in paths of righteousness For His Name’s sake.

And he died in a good old age, satisfied with days, riches and esteem. And Shelomoh his son reigned in his place.

O יהוה, Your loving-commitment is in the heavens, And Your trustworthiness reaches to the clouds.

He who pursues righteousness and loving-commitment Finds life, righteousness and esteem.

“They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat. For the days of My people are going to be as the days of a tree, and My chosen ones outlive the work of their hands.

For every matter there is an appointed time, even a time for every pursuit under the heavens:I have seen the task Elohim has given to the sons of men to be humbled by it.He has made it all, beautiful in its time. Even the ages He has put in their hearts, except that no one finds out the work that Elohim does from beginning to end.I know that there is no good for them but to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is a gift of Elohim.I know that whatever Elohim does is forever. There is no adding to it, and there is no taking from it. Elohim does it, that men should fear before Him.Whatever is has already been, and what shall be has been before. But Elohim seeks out what has been pursued.Then again I saw under the sun: In the place of right-ruling, wrongness was there. And in the place of righteousness, wrongness was there.I said in my heart, “Elohim judges the righteous and the wrong, for there is a time for every matter and for every work.”I said in my heart, “Concerning the matter of the sons of men, Elohim selects them, so as to see that they themselves are beasts.”For the event of the sons of men is also the event of beasts – one event befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Indeed, they all have one breath – man has no advantage over beasts. For all is futile.A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot;

For יהוה is good; His loving-commitment is everlasting, And His truth, to all generations.

The blessing of יהוה makes one rich, And He adds no pain with it.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustworthiness,gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no Torah.

Mem Who, then, is the man that fears יהוה? He teaches him in the way he should choose.

But thanks to Elohim who gives us the overcoming through our Master יהושע Messiah.

The hand of the hard worker rules, But the lazy is put to compulsory labour.

Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not look around, for I am your Elohim. I shall fortify you, I shall also help you, I shall also uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.’

being persuaded of this, that He who has begun a good work in you shall perfect it until the day of יהושע Messiah.

I give thanks to You, For I am awesomely and wondrously made! Wondrous are Your works, And my being knows it well.

And we know that all matters work together for good to those who love Elohim, to those who are called according to his purpose.

Why are you depressed, O my being? And why are you restless within me? Wait for Elohim: for I shall yet thank Him, the deliverance of my face, And my Elohim.

But seek first the reign of Elohim, and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you.

And delight yourself in יהוה, And let Him give you the desires of your heart.

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the esteem that is to be revealed in us.

My being lives, and it praises You; And Your right-rulings help me.

A good name is better than precious oil, and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.

In the day I am afraid, I trust in You.In Elohim, whose Word I praise, In Elohim I have trusted; I do not fear; What could flesh do to me?

Nun Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Do not be led astray: Elohim is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he shall also reap.

Sameḵ The secret of יהוה is with those who fear Him, And He makes His covenant known to them.

For יהוה Elohim is a sun and a shield; יהוה gives favour and esteem; He withholds no good matter From those who walk blamelessly.

“Respect your father and your mother, so that your days are prolonged upon the soil which יהוה your Elohim is giving you.

Mem Who is the man who desires life, Who loves many days, in order to see good?Nun Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit.Sameḵ Turn away from evil and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it.

Hear, my son, and accept my words, And let the years of your life be many.

The reward of humility is the fear of יהוה, Riches, and esteem and life.

When he calls on Me, I answer him; I am with him in distress; I deliver him and esteem him.”With long life I satisfy him, And show him My deliverance.

“Respect your father and mother,” which is the first command with promise,for which I am an envoy in chains, that in it I might speak boldly, as I should speak.Now, in order that you also might know about me, how I am doing, Tuchikos, a beloved brother and trustworthy servant in the Master, shall make all matters known to you,whom I did send to you for this same purpose, so that you know about us, and might encourage your hearts.Peace to the brothers, and love, with belief, from Elohim the Father and the Master יהושע Messiah.Favour be with all those who love our Master יהושע Messiah, undecayingly! Amĕn.in order that it might be well with you, and you might live long on the earth.”

Prayer
