Longevity is all about survival, persistence, endurance, lasting a long time, and simply being vital and alive. Think about it, from the very beginning, God didn't want us to die; He wanted us to live forever here on Earth.

When you read those first chapters of Genesis, it's clear that disobedience and sin are what brought death into the world. But there's also this promise of a long life woven throughout the Bible.

Look at the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:12¹²: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." Right there, God connects honoring your parents with living a longer life. Pretty powerful stuff.

Wise King Solomon, in Ecclesiastes, also gives us some food for thought about living a long time. He basically says, don't do a lot of bad stuff, don't be foolish, why die before your time? The further you are from evil, the longer you'll live.

And I think there's also this unspoken idea that if you take care of your body – the temple of God – He'll take care of you. We see in the Bible that Jesus welcomed some believers directly into heaven, which makes me wonder if maybe a lack of care for their health led them there sooner than they might have otherwise gone.

It all comes down to this: we need to follow the instructions God gives us in His guidebook for life. Honor your parents, take care of your body, stay away from foolishness and evil, and ask God for wisdom and understanding. If you do these things, you won't die before your time. It’s that simple.

Certainly goodness and faithfulness will follow me all the days of my life, And my dwelling will be in the house of the Lord forever.

The Lord knows the days of the blameless, And their inheritance will be forever.They will not be ashamed in the time of evil, And in the days of famine they will have plenty.

You shall walk entirely in the way which the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and that it may be well for you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.

“I will satisfy him with a long life, And show him My salvation.”

Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways.When you eat the fruit of the labor of your hands, You will be happy and it will go well for you.

For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you.

For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you.

“No longer will there be in it an infant who lives only a few days, Or an old person who does not live out his days; For the youth will die at the age of a hundred, And the one who does not reach the age of a hundred Will be thought accursed.

And which of you by worrying can add a single day to his life’s span?

I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have revived me.

“The Lord puts to death and makes alive; He brings down to Sheol and brings up.

You will make known to me the way of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

Your eyes have seen my formless substance; And in Your book were written All the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

My son, do not forget my teaching, But have your heart comply with my commandments;Then your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord Or loathe His rebuke,For whom the Lord loves He disciplines, Just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.¶Blessed is a person who finds wisdom, And one who obtains understanding.For her profit is better than the profit of silver, And her produce better than gold.She is more precious than jewels, And nothing you desire compares with her.Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.Her ways are pleasant ways, And all her paths are peace.She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are those who hold on to her.The Lord founded the earth by wisdom, He established the heavens by understanding.For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you.

These are all the years of Abraham’s life that he lived, 175 years.Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people.

¶“Because he has loved Me, I will save him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.

The fear of the Lord prolongs life, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.

“You will come to the grave at a ripe age, Like the stacking of grain in its season.

And even when I am old and gray, God, do not abandon me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come.

But You, God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.

For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

A tranquil heart is life to the body, But jealousy is rottenness to the bones.

¶“Because he has loved Me, I will save him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.

Do not trust in noblemen, In mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; On that very day his plans perish.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.It will be healing to your body And refreshment to your bones.

so that your days and the days of your sons may be increased on the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

They will still yield fruit in advanced age; They will be full of sap and very green,

The path of life leads upward for the wise, So that he may keep away from Sheol below.

Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain with man forever, because he is also flesh; nevertheless his days shall be 120 years.”

Those who love Your Law have great peace, And nothing causes them to stumble.

He also chose His servant David And took him from the sheepfolds;From the care of the ewes with nursing lambs He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance.So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.

Even to your old age I will be the same, And even to your graying years I will carry you! I have done it, and I will bear you; And I will carry you and I will save you.

“For one who finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the Lord.“But one who sins against me injures himself; All those who hate me love death.”

Do not be excessively wicked, and do not be foolish. Why should you die before your time?

A gray head is a crown of glory; It is found in the way of righteousness.

¶Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their guilty deeds, were afflicted.Their souls loathed all kinds of food, And they came close to the gates of death.

¶As for man, his days are like grass; Like a flower of the field, so he flourishes.When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place no longer knows about it.

“The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your possessions, acquire understanding.

“And the Lord will continually guide you, And satisfy your desire in scorched places, And give strength to your bones; And you will be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.

Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor,not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. Wait for God, for I will again praise Him For the help of His presence, my God.My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?

I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches.

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for before he was taken up, he was attested to have been pleasing to God.

for bodily training is just slightly beneficial, but godliness is beneficial for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Praise the Lord! Blessed is a person who fears the Lord, Who greatly delights in His commandments.¶The wicked will see it and be vexed, He will gnash his teeth and melt away; The desire of the wicked will perish.His descendants will be mighty on the earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed.Wealth and riches are in his house, And his righteousness endures forever.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

In the way of righteousness there is life, And in its pathway there is no death.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, Whose hope is in the Lord his God,Who made heaven and earth, The sea and everything that is in them; Who keeps faith forever;

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have placed before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,and you return to the Lord your God and obey Him with all your heart and soul in accordance with everything that I am commanding you today, you and your sons,by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding close to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, so that you may live in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary.

Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones.

So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.

Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future.

¶Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, The God who is our salvation. Selah

¶Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.

After this, Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons and his grandsons, four generations.And Job died, an old man and full of days.

May the Lord increase you, You and your children.May you be blessed of the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth.

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;for “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Behold, for so shall a man Who fears the Lord be blessed.

Sustain me so that I may be safe, That I may have regard for Your statutes continually.

Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.

To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The cloak of praise instead of a disheartened spirit. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

The Lord is my shepherd, I will not be in need.He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For the sake of His name.

Then he died at a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor; and his son Solomon reigned in his place.

¶Your mercy, Lord, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

One who pursues righteousness and loyalty Finds life, righteousness, and honor.

“They will not build and another inhabit, They will not plant and another eat; For as the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, And My chosen ones will fully enjoy the work of their hands.

There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every matter under heaven—I have seen the task which God has given the sons of mankind with which to occupy themselves. He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, without the possibility that mankind will find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime;moreover, that every person who eats and drinks sees good in all his labor—this is the gift of God.I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it. And God has so worked, that people will fear Him.That which is, is what has already been, and that which will be has already been; and God seeks what has passed by. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting And His faithfulness is to all generations.

It is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich, And He adds no sorrow to it.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

¶Who is the person who fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way he should choose.

but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The hand of the diligent will rule, But the lazy hand will be put to forced labor.

‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus.

I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Bless the Lord, my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name.He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our guilty deeds.For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our wrongdoings from us.Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Let my soul live that it may praise You, And let Your ordinances help me.

The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord gives grace and glory; He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.

Who is the person who desires life And loves length of days, that he may see good?Keep your tongue from evil And your lips from speaking deceit.Turn from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.

¶Listen, my son, and accept my sayings, And the years of your life will be many.

The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches, honor, and life.

“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.“I will satisfy him with a long life, And show him My salvation.”

Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Now, so that you also may know about my circumstances as to what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make everything known to you.I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts. Prayer
