The word "covenant" describes the agreements, commitments, and promises between God and His people. These covenants are a testament to God's unconditional love for humanity and His desire to redeem and restore us.
One of the most significant covenants in the Bible is God's covenant with Abraham. In Genesis 12, God makes a covenant with Abraham, promising to bless him and make him the father of many nations. This isn't just a specific covenant between God and Abraham; it extends to all his descendants.
But this isn't the only covenant we find in the Bible. Other notable covenants include God's covenant with Moses, established on Mount Sinai, where God gives the Ten Commandments and establishes the laws for the Israelites to follow. There's also God's covenant with David, in which God promises that an eternal king will come from David's lineage.
These covenants between God and humankind reveal His character, His faithfulness, and His desire for a close relationship with His creation. Through them, God shows His willingness to fulfill His promises and His commitment to being present in the lives of His people. Above all, they teach us that He doesn't go back on His word. God always keeps His promises because He cannot lie.
These covenants remind us that God is a covenant-keeping God, faithful to His promises and committed to those who choose to enter into covenant with Him. So, when you make a covenant with God, don't delay in keeping your word. He takes it very seriously, and He's the first to fulfill everything He's said He'll do for you and your family.
So realize that the Lord your God is the true God, the faithful God who keeps covenant faithfully with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
I will place my rainbow in the clouds, and it will become a guarantee of the covenant between me and the earth.
Then I will confirm my covenant between me and you, and I will give you a multitude of descendants.”
The Lord is indeed going before you – he will be with you; he will not fail you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged!”
But the Lord continually shows loyal love to his faithful followers, and is faithful to their descendants,to those who keep his covenant, who are careful to obey his commands.
And so he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the eternal inheritance he has promised, since he died to set them free from the violations committed under the first covenant.
And now, if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine,
The Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”
Even if the mountains are removed and the hills displaced, my devotion will not be removed from you, nor will my covenant of friendship be displaced,” says the Lord, the one who has compassion on you.
But now Jesus has obtained a superior ministry, since the covenant that he mediates is also better and is enacted on better promises.
“Therefore, keep the terms of this covenant and obey them so that you may be successful in everything you do.
I also call on you to love the Lord your God, to obey him and be loyal to him, for he gives you life and enables you to live continually in the land the Lord promised to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
That day Joshua drew up an agreement for the people, and he established rules and regulations for them in Shechem.
And he revealed to you the covenant he has commanded you to keep, the ten commandments, writing them on two stone tablets.
My dynasty is approved by God, for he has made a perpetual covenant with me, arranged in all its particulars and secured. He always delivers me, and brings all I desire to fruition.
I confirm my covenant with you: Never again will all living things be wiped out by the waters of a flood; never again will a flood destroy the earth.”
So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread, and he did not drink water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
And after taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you,for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, that is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
“Indeed, a time is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah.
He always remembers his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations –the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac!
“At that time I will make a covenant for them with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creatures that crawl on the ground. I will abolish the warrior’s bow and sword – that is, every weapon of warfare – from the land, and I will allow them to live securely.”
He proclaims his word to Jacob, his statutes and regulations to Israel.The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem, and gathers the exiles of Israel.He has not done so with any other nation; they are not aware of his regulations. Praise the Lord!
He has done this to show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant –the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham. This oath grants
Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish a lasting covenant with you.
I will make you pass under the shepherd’s staff, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.
“Indeed, a time is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah.It will not be like the old covenant that I made with their ancestors when I delivered them from Egypt. For they violated that covenant, even though I was like a faithful husband to them,” says the Lord.“But I will make a new covenant with the whole nation of Israel after I plant them back in the land,” says the Lord. “I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts and minds. I will be their God and they will be my people.“People will no longer need to teach their neighbors and relatives to know me. For all of them, from the least important to the most important, will know me,” says the Lord. “For I will forgive their sin and will no longer call to mind the wrong they have done.”
Pay attention and come to me! Listen, so you can live! Then I will make an unconditional covenantal promise to you, just like the reliable covenantal promises I made to David.
“I, the Lord, officially commission you; I take hold of your hand. I protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people, and a light to the nations,
I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh.I will put my Spirit within you; I will take the initiative and you will obey my statutes and carefully observe my regulations.
I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be a perpetual covenant with them. I will establish them, increase their numbers, and place my sanctuary among them forever.
This is what the Lord says: “At the time I decide to show my favor, I will respond to you; in the day of deliverance I will help you; I will protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people, to rebuild the land and to reassign the desolate property.
“My covenant with him was designed to bring life and peace. I gave its statutes to him to fill him with awe, and he indeed revered me and stood in awe before me.
So Moses took the blood and splashed it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord made with you, I remained there forty days and nights, eating and drinking nothing.
Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you except to revere him, to obey all his commandments, to love him, to serve him with all your mind and being,and to keep the Lord’s commandments and statutes that I am giving you today for your own good?
Today the Lord your God is commanding you to keep these statutes and ordinances, something you must do with all your heart and soul.Today you have declared the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commandments, and ordinances, and obey him.And today the Lord has declared you to be his special people (as he already promised you) so you may keep all his commandments.Then he will elevate you above all the nations he has made and you will receive praise, fame, and honor. You will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he has said.
He says: “Assemble my covenant people before me, those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty.
This is the person who will live in a secure place; he will find safety in the rocky, mountain strongholds; he will have food and a constant supply of water.
They will ask the way to Zion; they will turn their faces toward it. They will come and bind themselves to the Lord in a lasting covenant that will never be forgotten.
“‘I will make a covenant of peace with them and will rid the land of wild beasts, so that they can live securely in the wilderness and even sleep in the woods.
Then you will know that I sent this commandment to you so that my covenant may continue to be with Levi,” says the Lord who rules over all.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them.I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
For the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel from faith to faith, just as it is written, “The righteous by faith will live.”
who are Israelites. To them belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises.
For Christ is the end of the law, with the result that there is righteousness for everyone who believes.
So I ask, God has not rejected his people, has he? Absolutely not! Seeing that I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,if somehow I could provoke my people to jealousy and save some of them.For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?If the first portion of the dough offered is holy, then the whole batch is holy, and if the root is holy, so too are the branches.Now if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them and participated in the richness of the olive root,do not boast over the branches. But if you boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.Then you will say, “The branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.”God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew! Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?
Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread that we break a sharing in the body of Christ?Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.
For every one of God’s promises are “Yes” in him; therefore also through him the “Amen” is spoken, to the glory we give to God.
who made us adequate to be servants of a new covenant not based on the letter but on the Spirit, for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Brothers and sisters, I offer an example from everyday life: When a covenant has been ratified, even though it is only a human contract, no one can set it aside or add anything to it.Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant. Scripture does not say, “and to the descendants,” referring to many, but “and to your descendant,” referring to one, who is Christ.What I am saying is this: The law that came four hundred thirty years later does not cancel a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to invalidate the promise.For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise, but God graciously gave it to Abraham through the promise.

He said, “See, I am going to make a covenant before all your people. I will do wonders such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation. All the people among whom you live will see the work of the Lord, for it is a fearful thing that I am doing with you.
In spite of this, however, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them and abhor them to make a complete end of them, to break my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God.
Be on guard so that you do not forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he has made with you, and that you do not make an image of any kind, just as he has forbidden you.For the Lord your God is a consuming fire; he is a jealous God.
It is not because of your righteousness, or even your inner uprightness, that you have come here to possess their land. Instead, because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out ahead of you in order to confirm the promise he made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
If your sons keep my covenant and the rules I teach them, their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”

I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within them; I will remove the hearts of stone from their bodies and I will give them tender hearts,The Lord said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who plot evil and give wicked advice in this city.so that they may follow my statutes and observe my regulations and carry them out. Then they will be my people, and I will be their God.
Moreover, as for you, because of our covenant relationship secured with blood, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit.

While they were eating, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it. For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”
Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing.Pharaoh gave his men orders about Abram, and so they expelled him, along with his wife and all his possessions.I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.”
He took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people, and they said, “We are willing to do and obey all that the Lord has spoken.”
You are standing today, all of you, before the Lord your God – the heads of your tribes, your elders, your officials, every Israelite man,your infants, your wives, and the foreigners living in your encampment, those who chop wood and those who carry water –so that you may enter by oath into the covenant the Lord your God is making with you today.Today he will affirm that you are his people and that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore by oath to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.It is not with you alone that I am making this covenant by oath,but with whoever stands with us here today before the Lord our God as well as those not with us here today.

Do not swerve from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful in all you do.This law scroll must not leave your lips! Don’t be afraid and don’t panic, for I, the Lord your God, am with you in all you do.”
He delivered his people; he ordained that his covenant be observed forever. His name is holy and awesome.
“As for me, this is my promise to them,” says the Lord. “My spirit, who is upon you, and my words, which I have placed in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and descendants from this time forward,” says the Lord.

So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away – look, what is new has come!
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to the promise.
namely, that through the gospel the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus.
He has destroyed what was against us, a certificate of indebtedness expressed in decrees opposed to us. He has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.
But now Christ has come as the high priest of the good things to come. He passed through the greater and more perfect tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation,and he entered once for all into the most holy place not by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood, and so he himself secured eternal redemption.
It is a snare for a person to rashly cry, “Holy!” and only afterward to consider what he has vowed.
For you will spread out to the right and to the left; your children will conquer nations and will resettle desolate cities.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.”
For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of God’s truth to confirm the promises made to the fathers,

according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by being set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ’s blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure!

I will make showers come down in their season; they will be showers that bring blessing.

But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (which is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed –namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction,

So then you are no longer foreigners and noncitizens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,
And you were at one time strangers and enemies in your minds as expressed through your evil deeds,but now he has reconciled you by his physical body through death to present you holy, without blemish, and blameless before him –
And the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us, for after saying,“This is the covenant that I will establish with them after those days, says the Lord. I will put my laws on their hearts and I will inscribe them on their minds,”then he says, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no longer.”Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

And let us hold unwaveringly to the hope that we confess, for the one who made the promise is trustworthy.
The Lord always proves faithful and reliable to those who follow the demands of his covenant.
At that time a root from Jesse will stand like a signal flag for the nations. Nations will look to him for guidance, and his residence will be majestic.
God publicly displayed him at his death as the mercy seat accessible through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed.
He has not done so with any other nation; they are not aware of his regulations. Praise the Lord!

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.”The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children.And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ) – if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.
Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,saying, “Surely I will bless you greatly and multiply your descendants abundantly.”

For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of God’s truth to confirm the promises made to the fathers,and thus the Gentiles glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to your name.”
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
