“The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them.


Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.


Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.


Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.


Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us.


Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and who rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord!


See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.


Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob; but you have been weary of me, O Israel!


We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.


There is no one who calls on your name or attempts to take hold of you, for you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.


The people did not turn to him who struck them or seek the Lord of hosts.


In vain I have struck down your children; they accepted no correction. Your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.


All your lovers have forgotten you; they care nothing for you, for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy, the punishment of a merciless foe, because your guilt is great, because your sins are so numerous.


Indeed, I heard Ephraim pleading: “You disciplined me, and I took the discipline; I was like an untrained calf. Bring me back; let me come back, for you are the Lord my God.


It is because you burned offerings and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his decrees that this disaster has befallen you, as is still evident today.”


I am going to watch over them for harm and not for good; all the people of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall perish by the sword and by famine until not one is left.


O Lord, do your eyes not look for truth? You have struck them, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to turn back.


Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored; renew our days as of old—


Because you have not remembered the days of your youth but have enraged me with all these things, therefore I have returned your deeds upon your head, says the Lord God. Have you not committed lewdness beyond all your abominations?


“All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. So the curse and the oath written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out upon us because we have sinned against you.


Israel’s pride testifies against him; yet they do not return to the Lord their God or seek him, for all this.


They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; they gash themselves for grain and wine; they rebel against me.


All of them are hot as an oven, and they devour their rulers. All their kings have fallen; none of them calls upon me.


Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,


If those to whom the word of God came were called ‘gods’—and the scripture cannot be annulled—


It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me.


and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”


For surely you have heard about him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus,


But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.


If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.
