They replied, “Some say you are John the Immerser; some [the prophet] Elijah; and others [the prophet] Jeremiah, or one of the [other] prophets [come back to life].”


His disciples asked Him, “Why then [since you are obviously the Messiah] do the experts in the Law of Moses say that Elijah must come first, [i.e., before the Messiah]?”


But others said, “He is [the prophet] Elijah” [while] others said, “He is a prophet like one of the prophets [of old].”


And they answered Him, “[Some say] you are John the Immerser; others say [the prophet] Elijah, but others say [you are] one of the prophets.”


And they answered, “[Some say you are] John the Immerser, while others say [the prophet] Elijah, and [still others say] that one of the [other] prophets of old has risen again [from the dead].”


So, they asked him, “Who then [are you]? Are you Elijah [i.e., returned from the dead]?” But he answered, “[No], I am not.” “[Then], are you the prophet [i.e., Moses. See Deut. 18:15-19]?” they asked. And he answered, “No.”
