As a result, the people of Israel suffered a great defeat because, wanting to do a brave thing, they didn’t obey Judas and his brothers.

For they did not listen to Judas and his brothers, supposing that they should act boldly.

Because they did not hearken to Judas, and his brethren, thinking that they should do manfully.

This great defeat came about because the Jewish commanders wanted to be heroes and refused to obey Judas and his brothers.
