In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho; he laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his first-born, and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun.


Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great.


who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wrong.


Woe to the bloody city, all full of lies and booty— no end to the plunder!


Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, in scoffing derision of him, and say, “Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own— for how long?— and loads himself with pledges!”


But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us;


Joshua laid an oath upon them at that time, saying, “Cursed before the Lord be the man that rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. “At the cost of his first-born shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.”


And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her I marveled greatly.
